The setting moon illuminates a lonely Whitebark Pine, Wizard Island, and Crater Lake as the Milky Way core rises into the night sky above.

The Magician's Scepter - Milky Way over Crater Lake, Wizard Island, and the Leaning Whitebark Pine

Merriam Point, West Rim, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Milky Way and Vibrant Airglow over the Leaning Whitebark Pine, Wizard Island and Crater Lake under Moonlight in Crater Lake National Park

The Milky Way rises over the Leaning Whitebark Pine of Crater Lake, as Wizard Island rises up from the waters of Crater Lake behind it. The setting 67.8% illuminated moon is just 3.8 degrees above the western horizon, casting a warm moonlight glow on Fumarole Bay, Skell Channel, and the tree and the surrounding landscape in Crater Lake National Park.

Over 5 miles across the water from this point on the West Rim, Sun Notch and Applegate Peak rise up from the South Rim of Crater Lake, as Garfield Peak rises 4.4 miles away below a small cloud glowing deep orange from the light pollution of Klamath Falls 54 miles away.

The Milky Way core rises directly above Mount McLoughlin and Union Peak on the southwest rim, as the Dark Horse Nebula, the Great Rift and the Sagittarius Star Cloud reach skywards through the airglow. Green airglow reflects off Crater Lake, as the vibrant airglow colors in the night sky blends with the orange light pollution from Medford 57 miles away and 5,945 feet below the rim to create a brilliant rainbow of color stretching up from the horizon into the night sky. The warm, orange sodium vapor light pollution blends with yellow and green airglow, creating a muted bronze color where the light pollution and airglow blend together. It's the same effect that created the distinct colors in False Sunrise and The Magician's Wand.

Ironically, modern, energy efficient LED lighting many cities have switched to creates more light pollution. These lights shine brighter with a cool, blue color which makes scenes like this harder to come by, and it also makes it harder for astronomers to observe the night sky. I've always tried to utilize conditions present to my advantage, and I've always found the rainbow of color you get from the old school sodium vapor lighting blending with airglow a beautiful sight. The white light dome is much more sterile, and ironically didymium glass light pollution filters have no effect on LED light pollution, since didymium glass is specifically tuned to block sodium vapor wavelengths, having originally been developed for glass blowers to filter the bright sodium flare from molten glass. They were later adopted by astrophotographers for the same sodium wavelength blocking properties, something that modern LED lighting essentially renders useless.

Still, the Bortle Class 1 dark skies up here are amazing to see, proof of which can be found in the sheer amount of stars and the details of the Milky Way visible despite the setting 67.8% moon still casting a glow onto the landscape and skies. Bortle Class 1 skies are among the darkest skies on earth, and that's always been one of my favorite parts of Crater Lake. There's nothing like seeing one of nature's greatest wonders, asleep at night under a blanket of stars.

Note on Provenance - Crater Lake, the Leaning Whitebark Pine and the Rainbow of Night

This image was captured during an era of sodium vapor street lighting in Klamath Falls and Medford, creating the warm orange horizon glow visible here. As cities transition to LED lighting, this warm light pollution effect is disappearing, making this image a document of a specific moment in both astronomical and urban lighting history. The image is a certified Single Exposure. Captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of nightscape experience. No trackers, no sky-swaps, and no generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
