The Magician's Wand - Milky Way over Wizard Island, Crater Lake, and a Moonlit Tree Snag

Devil's Backbone, West Rim, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Milky Way over a Moonlit Tree Snag, Wizard Island and Crater Lake from the West Rim of Crater Lake National Park

The setting moon illuminates a Whitebark Pine tree snag with a warm glow along the West Rim of Crater Lake as the Milky Way core rises high into the night sky above. The tree snag sits perched atop a small hill made of volcanic rock along the West Rim like a magician’s wand as Wizard Island rises from behind the tree snag, its concave summit glowing in warm moonlight. Mount McLoughlin rises up above the South Rim of Crater Lake behind it, as Garfield Peak rises up on the South Rim to the southeast of Wizard Island while tall Hemlock trees can be seen growing along the top of the West Rim in the distance. This Whitebark Pine tree snag is a reminder of the conservation challenges facing Whitebark Pines at Crater Lake.

The jagged vertical dike of Devil's Backbone begins just below the rim here, running from near the rim just below this spot, descending the caldera wall toward the water, ending near The Wizard's Mirror shooting location to the north. The Devil's Backbone formation itself is a remnant of ancient magma intrusion exposed by erosion following Mount Mazama's catastrophic collapse 7,700 years ago, and once you see the jagged spine of hardened magma cutting diagonally down the caldera wall, the name Devil's Backbone becomes immediately apparent.

Haze on the horizon catches light pollution from sodium vapor lighting over 54 miles away in Klamath Falls (54 miles away and 3,213 feet below the rim) and Medford (57 miles away and 5,945 feet below the rim) as the warm orange color blends with airglow and the warm glow from the setting moon to create a rainbow of color on the horizon. For an even more dramatic example of this sodium vapor glow effect, see False Sunrise. Ironically, the movement by cities to replace old sodium vapor lighting with modern energy efficient LED lights has eliminated the warm light dome on the horizon, replacing it with a white light dome that extends higher up into the sky. As time goes on, scenes like this utilizing a warm light pollution glow as a beautiful compositional element, will become increasingly rare as the cold white look of LED light pollution does not create the same warm color effect.

On the horizon above Crater Lake's rim, warm orange from the light pollution blends into yellow and green airglow, which slowly fades into the night sky above. The setting 67.7% moon creates a beautiful dark blue color in the night sky, as all the colors come together in a magical manner in the middle of the night. The dark Bortle class 1 skies at Crater Lake are always a stunning sight to witness, but experiencing them under such unique circumstances is something I'll never forget.

Fine art landscape photograph of the Milky Way and airglow over a moonlit whitebark pine tree snag, Crater Lake, and Wizard Island from above Devil's Backbone in Crater Lake National Park. This image captures the stunning cosmic glow of the Milky Way, setting moonlight and a rainbow of color in the airglow above Oregon's only National Park, available as a luxury museum-grade limited edition print by James Mead.

Moonset Milky Way over A Tree Snag and Wizard Island: The Wonders of Crater Lake at Night

I've always loved it when things come together in nature to produce a stunning, otherworldly scene which combines multiple things together in a manner we typically don't see. This single exposure was actually taken at 1:14am, as the moon was setting. The moon was a 67.7% waxing gibbous, and as it dipped towards the horizon to the west, it cast a warm glow on the landscape, and a bluish hue in the sky. The warm light from the setting Moon created a warm glow on Wizard Island, this tree snag and the mound it rests on as colors which resemble sunrise and sunset illuminate the horizon above the rim. These sunrise colors are a result of the moonlight mixing with light pollution from far away and far below, creating a beautiful warm look on the horizon. Everything came together in such a beautiful manner, an otherworldly scene in an otherworldly place. Crater Lake has long been one of those places where time seemingly stands still, and the impossible suddenly seems possible. Its beauty has inspired me for longer than I can remember, and scenes like this are a good reminder of why it probably always will. No matter how many times I've been to this wondrous place, I'll always find my way back here.

Note on Provenance - The Milky Way and a Rainbow of Night Color above Crater Lake

This image was captured during an era of sodium vapor street lighting in Klamath Falls and Medford, creating the warm orange horizon glow visible here. As cities transition to LED lighting, this warm light pollution effect is disappearing, making this image a document of a specific moment in both astronomical and urban lighting history. The image is a certified Single Exposure. Captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of nightscape experience. No trackers, no sky-swaps, and no generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
