Light pollution from Klamath Falls looks like the sun rising on the horizon as the Milky Way rises above Crater Lake’s moonlit caldera rim.

False Sunrise - Milky Way over Crater Lake and the West Caldera Rim under Waxing Gibbous Moonlight

Watchman Overlook, West Rim, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

The Milky Way over Crater Lake, the Slopes of Watchman Peak and the West Caldera Rim under Waxing Gibbous Moonlight in Crater Lake National Park

The Milky Way core rises high into the night sky above Crater Lake as a setting 67.7% waxing gibbous moon just 8.9° above the horizon to the west illuminates Crater Lake's caldera rim. The slopes of Watchman Peak (also known as The Watchman) rise up above the caldera below the Milky Way core, a warm glow of light far below the horizon glows just to the south of Crater Peak.

The light on far below the horizon may look like the sun rising, but it's actually the light pollution from Klamath Falls, Oregon 54 miles away and 3,213 feet below the rim. Haze and low clouds on the horizon caught the warm sodium vapor light pollution from Klamath Falls, creating a warm glow on the horizon and a yellow orb of light just to the right of Stukel Mountain and Plum Hill far below. These warm orange colors give way to yellow and green airglow, creating a rainbow of color before it blends into the dark blue night sky above created by the 67.7% illuminated setting moon. A subtler version of this effect appears in The Magician's Wand, taken from a different West Rim location.

Ironically, cities have been replacing the old sodium vapor lighting with modern energy efficient LED lights, which has eliminated the warm light dome on the horizon and replaced it with a white light dome that extends higher up into the sky. As time goes on, scenes like this utilizing a warm light pollution glow as a beautiful compositional element will become increasingly rare as the cold white light dome from LED light pollution does not create the same warm color effect.

Still, witnessing all these compositional elements coming together this night was truly a magical sight to witness, especially against the dark Bortle class 1 skies at Crater Lake which still allow the Milky Way to shine bright. It's a wonderful harmony of color in one of the darkest sky locations in Oregon, all coming together to create a scene which feels as if it's straight out of a fairytale.

Fine art landscape photograph of the Milky Way and a rainbow of airglow color over moonlit Crater Lake from just off trail near Watchman Overlook in Crater Lake National Park. This image captures the stunning cosmic glow of the Milky Way and airglow above Oregon's only National Park, and is available as a luxury museum-grade limited edition print by James Mead.

Crater Lake, the Night Sky and the Magic of False Sunrise

I've always loved it when different elements come together in a scene to create an image straight out of a fairytale. I often try to utilize all the elements nature and the scene provide, even if it's what most consider less than ideal. I've long felt that when someone tries force a photo, the results are less than stellar. But when you take the beauty nature puts in front of you, embracing the unexpected or less than ideal, you're able to let your creativity flow. That's exactly what I did here.

Normally, most people consider the warm light pollution and light dome from old school sodium vapor lighting to be a nuisance; in fact many companies make didymium glass night sky filters specifically made to remove the warm glow of sodium vapor lighting. These filters specifically targeted the light pollution wavelength from sodium vapor lighting (ironically, they have zero effect on modern LED lighting cities use). I never cared much for these filters, as I'd often try to utilize the warm glow the light pollution created to capture a surreal, serene night sky scene that's often overlooked.

The way the warm glow on the horizon blended up with the yellow and green airglow this night was magical, as it created a rainbow of color in the middle of the night at 1:01am. A deep yellow light orb from Klamath Falls 54 miles away far below the Crater Lake rim glowed like the warm glow of the sun at sunrise, something that immediately caught my eye. This created an otherworldly scene were sunrise and the Milky Way all blended together in one magical, harmonious manner.

This is a single exposure using all the compositional elements of the scene to my advantage, and it created one of my favorite optical illusions I've ever witnessed over the course of my career. Witnessing the false sunrise was magical, as for a brief moment it felt as if sunrise and the Milky Way could co-exist at once. I suppose in a way they did, even if it wasn't actually sunrise. That's always been one of my favorite things about photography: finding the unexpected and freezing that moment in time to share with everyone, so that they may experience the magic of the moment too. Witnessing everything come together this night was a truly amazing experience, and as modern LED lighting renders scenes like this more and more rare with each passing year, I'll always look back on these magnificent moments fondly.

Note on Provenance - The Milky Way and a False Sunrise above Crater Lake

This image was captured during an era of sodium vapor street lighting in Klamath Falls and Medford, creating the warm orange horizon glow visible here. As cities transition to LED lighting, this warm light pollution effect is disappearing, making this image a document of a specific moment in both astronomical and urban lighting history. The image is a certified Single Exposure. Captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of nightscape experience. No trackers, no sky-swaps, and no generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
