Magic Slumber - Milky Way and Airglow over Crater Lake, the Leaning Whitebark Pine and Wizard Island
Merriam Point, West Rim, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
The Milky Way with Airglow over Crater Lake, the Leaning Whitebark Pine and Wizard Island in Crater Lake National Park
The Milky Way rises above Crater Lake, Wizard Island and a lonely leaning Whitebark Pine as airglow stretches across the night sky. Fumarole Bay and Skell Channel reflect the yellow airglow and warmer colors of the Milky Way core, while the rest of the lake reflects the green airglow color in the night sky.
The setting 67.9% moon is just 1.1 degrees above the horizon in the west, too low to illuminate Crater Lake and the caldera rim, but high enough to still cast a faint bit of moonlight color in the night sky. An orange band of light pollution rises up above the South Rim, with light from Medford 57 miles away and 5,945 feet below the rim and Klamath Falls 54 miles away and 3,213 feet below the rim casting a warm glow on the horizon. This mixes with a cloud low in the sky, to create a yellow burst of light above Garfield Peak which resembles a rising sun at night.
Far across the caldera over 5 miles away from this spot on the West Rim, Applegate Peak and Sun Notch rise up from the South Rim into the warm glow from the light pollution. The Sagittarius Star Cloud, Dark Horse Nebula and the Great Rift rise up directly above Union Peak and Mount McLoughlin, the latter of which resides 36.8 miles away. The vast distance renders the 9,492 foot tall volcano just a small peak rising up on the horizon.
Haze catches light pollution on the horizon, creating a warm glow of light which blends with the green and yellow airglow to create a stunning rainbow of color at night. It's the same atmospheric conjunction of elements that created the rainbow at night effect in The Magician's Scepter, False Sunrise, and The Magician's Wand, and it's something that is becoming increasingly harder to find as many cities switch to more energy efficient LED lights. The LED lights often shine brighter, creating a cool, blue light dome which reaches further into the sky. This makes the importance of protecting the Bortle Class 1 dark skies (the rating given to the darkest skies on Earth) in places like Crater Lake all the more important.
The Bortle Class 1 skies above Crater Lake are vast, with the stars twinkling brightly in amounts that are hard to fathom without seeing. The Milky Way core is dense and visible, and witnessing the wonderful blanket of stars shine brightly above one of Oregon's greatest treasures is something I'll never forget. I've been visiting Crater Lake for over 40 years, since I was a young child, and all these years later the natural beauty of this place still amazes me just as it did the first time I laid eyes on it.
Fine art landscape photograph of the vertical Milky Way with a yellow and green rainbow of airglow over Crater Lake and a leaning Whitebark Pine from the rim trail at the southern edge of Merriam Point in Crater Lake National Park. This image captures the stunning cosmic glow of the Milky Way above Oregon's only National Park, and is available as a luxury museum-grade limited edition print by James Mead.

Note on Provenance - The Milky Way, Crater Lake and the Magic Slumber of Night
This image was captured during an era of sodium vapor street lighting in Klamath Falls and Medford, creating the warm orange horizon glow visible here. As cities transition to LED lighting, this warm light pollution effect is disappearing, making this image a document of a specific moment in both astronomical and urban lighting history. The image is a certified Single Exposure. Captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of nightscape experience. No trackers, no sky-swaps, and no generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
