Wizard's Magic - Belt of Venus Sunset over Wizard Island and Crater Lake Below Watchman Peak

Watchman Overlook, West Rim, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Belt of Venus at Sunset over Wizard Island and Crater Lake with Alpenglow on Mount Scott and Cloudcap in Crater Lake National Park

Sunset brings the pastel colors of the Belt of Venus to the skies over Crater Lake and Wizard Island as the day draws to a close. Magenta alpenglow illuminates the top of the cone on Wizard Island, Cloudcap, Mount Scott, Dutton Cliff and Applegate Peak as Kerr Notch and Sun Notch lie in the shadows. Cloudcap rises on the East Rim 6.2 miles across the water from this point on the West Rim, showcasing just how vast the expanse of Crater Lake truly is.

Fine art landscape photograph of the Belt of Venus and sunset over Crater Lake and Wizard Island from just off the Watchman Peak Trail in Crater Lake National Park. This image captures the stunning sunset light and natural transitions above Oregon's only National Park, and is available as a luxury museum-grade limited edition print by James Mead.

Crater Lake, Mount Mazama, and the Forces of Nature that Created this Magical Place

Witnessing the beautiful contrast between the soft pastel magentas and purples against the deep cobalt blue water of Crater Lake is a sight to behold. It may be Oregon's only National Park, but it’s one of the best parks in the entire system as far as I'm concerned. There's nothing quite like the ethereal feeling of wonder I always find at this place. There's something magical about staring out at the deep blue water, knowing it goes down 1,943 feet as Wizard Island rises 760 feet (USGS) above the water. It's the deepest lake in the United States, the second deepest lake in North America and one of the deepest lakes in the world, and witnessing the beauty of the Belt of Venus unfold in the skies above at sunset is a wonderful reminder of what makes this place so special. It's a place that took a destructive force of nature, the cataclysmic eruption which destroyed Mount Mazama 7,700 years ago, and transformed it into a new kind of beauty: a 1,943 foot deep bowl of deep, pure cobalt blue water filling the caldera of Mount Mazama the eruption left in its wake. It's a perfect reminder that everything in nature is not what it seems, as even the most destructive forces in nature can result in some of its greatest, most unique treasures.

What is the Belt of Venus?

The Belt of Venus (also known as the antitwilight arch) is the pink glow in the sky which occurs around sunrise and sunset. It radiates out in both directions from a spot opposite the sun at a spot called the antisolar point, and is caused by sunlight from below the horizon scattering and reflecting back in the atmosphere. The blue section below the Belt of Venus is the Earth's shadow from night creeping in (or fading away at sunrise). The Belt of Venus isn't flat. It actually curves downward with the Earth's curve from the antisolar point in both directions until it disappears below the horizon, making it visible on both sides of the antisolar point.
