Sunset brings color to the sky as the upper cliffs of El Capitan illuminate orange from the last bit of sun. The waters of Horsetail Fall glow orange like lava as the famous Yosemite Firefall comes to life high above the banks of the Merced River.

So many photos of the Horsetail Fall "Firefall" don't really show the scale of just how small the waterfall is. I was aiming for a picture which caught the feeling I had standing there, something that captured the sheer beauty of the scene and the park. When I took this, you could still roam the river's shoreline during February when it was Firefall season, so I knew exactly where I was headed. There was over 4 feet of snow on the ground, so I strapped on my snowshoes, grabbed my poles and headed off. The heart-shaped glow on the cliffs of El Capitan surrounding Horsetail Fall as the small "Firefall" roared to life was something else, only topped by the mirror reflection of the entire scene in the crystal clear, still waters of the Merced River. There were very few people around here, so the feeling of solitude you get when viewing this photo is exactly what I experienced taking it. It's rare now to find solitude during that time of year in the park, even more so now that the crowds which come have forced them to shut down parts of the park for those two weeks that are normally open. I feel very fortunate that in the past when I visited the park during those two weeks, I was able to find solitude and visit these spots. To me that's always been the beauty of photography: its ability to freeze a moment in time so that you can share its beauty with everyone forever.

Historical and Provenance Note
Captured in February 2019, this image documents a wide-angle perspective of Yosemite’s Horsetail Fall "Firefall" and El Capitan reflecting in the Merced River that is no longer legally obtainable (taken at 16mm with a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM). Modern park management and conservation regulations initially implemented in 2020, and strengthened in 2021, now prohibit all pedestrian travel and entry along this section of Southside Drive and the banks of the Merced River during the event (including the river itself). This photograph serves as a rare archival record of El Capitan and the Firefall from a vantage point now restricted to protect the valley’s sensitive ecosystem
