Sunset illuminates the tips of snow covered Cathedral Rocks and Cathedral Spires gold, as a pink hue illuminates the face of El Capitan. Fog cloaking El Capitan lights with a pink hue from the setting sun, as the pinks, yellows and orange of sunset illuminates the cloud cover in the sky above Yosemite Valley as Bridalveil Fall tumbles 620 feet over the cliffs towards the snow covered valley below.
On the far edge of El Capitan where it slopes downward from this angle, the famous Horsetail Falls Yosemite Firefall roars to life, visible as a small glowing waterfall that looks like a thin sliver of lava set against the glowing orange cliffs of El Capitan behind it. Snow clings to the top of El Capitan and the lower sloped sections, as it completely blankets Yosemite Valley and the trees through it. Cathedral Rocks and Cathedral Spires lie covered in snow, as snow covered Sentinel Dome and Sentinel Rock illuminate with a brilliant yellow and orange glow of sunset. Half Dome and Clouds Rest lie covered in a shroud of clouds lit magenta from sunset, as the full glory of a winter sunset in Yosemite from Tunnel View comes to life in all its grandeur.

The Ethereal Wonder of Yosemite Valley, El Capitan, Tunnel View, and the Yosemite Firefall under a Blanket of Snow in the Winter at Sunset
I’ve always loved Yosemite. It’s by far my favorite place on the planet. A fresh, heavy snow can leave a marvelous blanket of snow, but when I arrived for this photo it looked like it may be a wash as far as a marvelous sunset was concerned. I’ve been here many times and seen many beautiful scenes, always dreaming of the perfect light under the perfect conditions. The famous Horsetail Fall Yosemite Firefall is actually visible from here under perfect conditions, but it looked as if this wouldn't be the day I finally saw Tunnel View, El Capitan and the Firefall at sunset from here in all its glory.
Clouds were everywhere, and the cliffs were covered in 100% fog. You couldn’t see El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall or anything else. As for the Yosemite Horsetail Fall Firefall? Common sense said forget it. But as always with me, hope springs eternal. All you need is one tiny break in the clouds in the right spot for the entire scene to light up like a winter sunset in Heaven as the Horsetail Fall Yosemite Firefall tumbles over the cliffs of El Capitan.
As sunset neared, it looked like it may pass without a hint of color nor a glimpse of towering granite cliffs, let alone anything else. I stayed exactly where I was and left my camera in place, waiting for the perfect light. I only needed the clouds to break for a few minutes, and I held out hope I would be granted my wish. As time passed, it looked as if that may not come to pass. But I waited and waited. A few minutes before sunset, there was a hint of the fog lifting. Soon after, the heavy fog began to lift and the clouds began to break. A minute later, there was a hint of light.
Then the full light hit, and it was glorious. El Capitan, Cathedral Rocks, Sentinel Dome, Sentinel Rock all illuminated with ethereal light as the Yosemite Firefall tumbled over the edge of El Capitan while sunset set the sky ablaze. It was as if light from heaven was shining directly down onto the towering granite cliffs, illuminating Yosemite as if I was looking at the Gates of Paradise as the clouds of heaven parted, showing them in all their grandeur. This moment seemingly staring straight into the gates of heaven is something I'll never forget. I've always felt Yosemite was a thin place, one of those places which blurs the lines between heaven and earth, and it certainly felt like that this day as I stared out into the Gates of Paradise.
