Sunset brings faint color to the skies above El Capitan and the Merced River. The setting sun illuminates the face of El Capitan and the waters of Horsetail Falls orange like lava as the famous Yosemite Firefall comes to life. Wind creates a spray mist from the waters of Horsetail Fall as it whips water sprays across the face of El Capitan, illuminating the mist orange and red like lava and fire.

It's always magical spending time in a place when it's covered in feet of snow. This was taken before the current restrictions were put in place (so this photo is no longer possible). It wasn't super crowded compared to what you see now, probably a product of the R2/R3 chain restrictions and snowshoes needed to get anywhere. I've seen and photographed this numerous times over the years from varying angles, and it's always been amazing (especially since my family is with me). My favorite part of this one was the perfectly times wind gust blowing the water across the face of El Capitan, illuminating the whole thing orange like fire. Seeing my son's face as it lit up was priceless. Being in places like this is always a treat, but being here with my family, experiencing the beauty together is what makes it a perfect moment in time. So many photographers in their time and places like this alone without their family, and I've always felt very fortunate that my wife and son have been with me almost everywhere I've gone, every step of the way. It makes me smile to know almost everything I've seen, my son and wife have also seen.

Historical and Provenance Note
Captured in February 2019, this image documents a perspective of Yosemite’s Horsetail Fall "Firefall" and El Capitan reflecting in the Merced River that is no longer legally obtainable (taken at 35mm with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM). Modern park management and conservation regulations initially implemented in 2020, and strengthened in 2021, now prohibit all pedestrian travel and entry along this section of Southside Drive and the banks of the Merced River during the event (including the river itself). This photograph serves as a rare archival record of El Capitan and the Firefall reflecting in the Merced River from a vantage point now restricted to protect the valley’s sensitive ecosystem.
