Sunset on Snow Covered Eagle Peak as It Rises over 3700 Feet above the Yosemite Valley Floor in Yosemite National Park, California

Winter sunset casts a warm glow on the snow covered slopes of Eagle Peak as it rises over 3700 feet above the Yosemite Valley floor. The ridges catch the last golden light of the day, illuminating the jagged ridge which resembles a Dragon Back as it runs up the slope towards the summit of Eagle Peak.

Golden color catches the clouds and illuminates the snow covered slopes high above the valley floor as the snow covered ridges of Eagle Peak glow with a soft golden color under the sunset light while the sky takes on a soft lavender hue. Eagle Peak is the highest of the Three Brothers rock formation peaks, with Middle Brother and Lower Brother being the other two peaks which make up the rock formation.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Sunset on Snowy Eagle Peak at 400mm as it rises 3700 feet above Yosemite Valley. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Yosemite National Park and Yosemite Valley, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

The Abstract Wonders of Winter on Eagle Peak High above Yosemite Valley

I've always loved staring up at the cliffs high above the Yosemite Valley floor in the winter. It's amazing to see the snow and ice cling to near vertical surfaces when the weather is cold and the snow has been coming down. This scene caught my eye pretty quickly, as it looked like the ridge on the back of a dragon going up towards the summit of Eagle Peak.

The mix of snow with the granite cliffs peaking through, as golden sunset light illuminates parts of the cliffs and snow covered ridges was truly magical. I've always found scenes like this amazing, since they often capture beauty that is very easy for people to overlook. Most people don't spend countless hours staring up at seemingly nothing on the granite cliffs thousands of feet above the valley floor, but I suppose I'm not most people. Scenes like this are why I always try to keep my head on a swivel out in nature, and it's why I almost always have everything from a 5DMKIII, an R5, and the RF 10-20 f/4 STM L rectilinear all the way up to 400mm on me at any given time. You never know what you'll find, so it's always good to be prepared.

Winter scenes like this are truly magnificent, they capture the full grandeur of winter at sunset as the magic of winter springs to life high above Yosemite Valley. Time seems to stand still, and for a brief moment it feels like you're staring up into the mountains of Heaven. Yosemite is a thin place which feels like it blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth. I've seen many wondrous things in Yosemite over the last 2 decades, but these abstract close up winter scenes which always feel like something more will always be among my favorites.
