Sunset bounces off the cliffs of El Capitan, backlighting the waters of Yosemite's Horsetail Fall orange like lava as Yosemite's famous Firefall natural optical illusion comes to life. Wind kicks up spray from the waterfall, pulling it across the face of El Capitan as the water spray glows orange while the lava like color of the waterfall tumbles down the cliffs.
The famous Yosemite Horsetail Falls Firefall has a chance to occur for roughly 2 weeks every year during the middle and late weeks of February when the angle of the setting sun at sunset is just right. If the water on Horsetail Creek in Yosemite National Park is flowing and there are no clouds blocking the sun's rays, the sunlight illuminates the cliffs of El Capitan behind Horsetail Fall, which backlights the waterfall causing it to a fiery orange color reminiscent of pure lava.
The sun actually sets at the correct angle in the autumn as well, but Yosemite's Horsetail Creek drains a small watershed, so Horsetail Falls in Yosemite is a highly ephemeral waterfall which often runs dry before summer. As a result, the narrow window to see one of nature's grandest optical illusions is limited to a few weeks in February. By the first few days of March the angle of the setting sun has changed enough that the nose of El Capitan blocks the sunlight from reaching the cliffs behind Horsetail Fall, and the Firefall natural optical illusion fades away until the next year.
Too early in February and something similar occurs: the angle of the setting sun doesn't quite reach Horsetail Fall yet. When the Firefall effect starts to occur, it's limited to a few minutes. At its peak, the effect can last for 10 minutes or more, though once the sun's angle starts to shift towards the nose of El Capitan the length of time the Firefall effect occurs begins to shorten. The window to view this stunning sight may be brief, but I've been photographing it professionally for over 15 years and every time I see it, it takes my breath away. My long history visiting Yosemite and photographing this has allowed me to take photographs of the Firefall from vantage points which are no longer accessible. Even though the access changes over time, the Firefall is marvelous no matter what vantage point you view it from.

The Otherworldly Wonder of Yosemite’s Horsetail Fall Firefall, Nature's Grandest Optical Illusion
This experience will always be a memorable one. I spent about a month down near Yosemite during the winter of 2019, photographing and reconnecting with old friends in the area. My wife and son joined me on this trip, which made it even better since they'd get to experience this too. Huge amounts of snow had dropped in the valley transforming it into a winter wonderland. Around 4-5 feet blanketed Yosemite Valley, with even more up top in the Yosemite High Country. Heavy R2 and R3 chain restrictions kept some of the crowds at bay for a few days, which is a rare thing in February in Yosemite. This "Firefall" isn't the historic one off Glacier Point, which was real fire dropped over the cliffs of Glacier Point towards Camp Curry below. The historic Yosemite Firefall was discontinued in January 1968 since it was not a natural occurrence and crowds trampled the meadows nightly to view it.
Unlike the historic Glacier Point Firefall, the Horsetail Fall Yosemite Firefall is a naturally occurring optical illusion on Horsetail Creek as it tumbles over the cliffs and down the face of El Capitan. The Horsetail Fall Firefall is highly weather dependent and it also requires water, which is a big if since Horsetail Creek in Yosemite is highly ephemeral and drains a very small watershed. Yosemite's Horsetail Fall is officially listed at 2,130 feet with the largest drop being 1,570 feet, but in all honesty you're going to have a hard time seeing anything but the top section of the waterfall when it's flowing as the waterfall is quite small and wispy, and the waterfall tends to hug the top of the cliff before fanning out as it drops down towards Yosemite Valley.
Horsetail Fall may be small visually, especially compared to Yosemite Falls which has a far larger flow volume, but seeing those magic orange colors as Horsetail Fall transitions from normal water to the color of pure lava is a sight I'll never forget. Looking at it through a 400mm lens was an awesome experience, as it took me right there close to it visually. There's always a bit of nervousness when chasing this one, as one rogue cloud in the sky can block the sun's rays and the Firefall optical illusion won't light. But when the clouds aren't blocking the sun's rays, seeing the water transition to the color of lava and fire is something that will stick with me the rest of my life. Nature is always beautiful, but views like this take the wonder of nature to a whole new level.
