Alpenglow illuminates the face of Half Dome at sunset as the scene reflects in the clear, calm waters of the Merced River in Yosemite Valley. The last bit of fall color hangs on as a Black Oak grows the south shore of the river, leaning over the river as it reflects in water so clear you can see through to the rocks lining the riverbed. I found this small, hidden spot along the river with Half Dome rising above decades ago, and it's always been a favorite of mine as it provides a more intimate view and feel compared to the more famous spots in the valley.

A Brief Window into Heaven: Half Dome Alpenglow in a Thin Place
I've always loved the stillness of the Merced River in the autumn. It's transitioned from a fast flowing river with a swift current to a slow, meandering channel of water that takes on the beautiful reflections of everything around it. One of my favorite sights has long been the way Half Dome rises above it all. Half Dome has captivated me with its beauty since the moment I first laid eyes on it decades ago. How the trees perfectly frame Half Dome here is pure perfection. There's green on one side of the river and Black Oak on the other, with the dual colors of the trees framing the dual colors of Half Dome as the scene reflects a perfect mirror image into the water. It's the duality of nature at its finest. Seeing the beautiful mix of mostly green with a small hint of autumn was a perfect complement against the warm colors of alpenglow on Half Dome, something nature always excels at.
As the sun sets, it illuminates the face of Half Dome a beautiful mix of gold and orange with a hint of magenta, as the scene reflects in the still waters of the river. The water clarity this time of year is amazing, allowing you to see through to the rocks at the bottom of the river while at the same time seeing the aforementioned reflection. This is a quiet stretch of the Merced River rarely visited by photographers, which creates a sense of serenity that's harder and harder to find nowadays. Yosemite is a thin place, and its beauty is seemingly straight out of Heaven. It's a beauty almost too perfect for this world. For a brief few moments, it seems like heaven is just beyond reach, within eyesight but just beyond the thin veil of nature. That's always been one of my favorite things about nature: for those brief few moments when everything comes together it feels like we've been graced with a brief window into heaven.
