Alpenglow just after sunset illuminates the skies above El Capitan and Cathedral Rocks with brilliant pinks and purples as they rise up from a layer of mist and fog covering the Yosemite Valley floor, while the scene reflects in the Merced River like a perfect mirror at Valley View (also known as Gates of the Valley) in Yosemite Valley. Bridalveil Fall slows to a trickle, dropping 620 feet over the granite cliffs towards the Yosemite Valley floor in the early winter as the last remaining fall colors clinging valiantly to the trees reflecting in the mirror-like waters of the Merced River.
Snow lines Bridalveil Meadow and the shore of the Merced River, as the edge of Half Dome can be seen behind trees in the distance and the edge of Clouds Rest can be seen behind the trees just to the right of El Capitan. Snow clings to the tops of the cliffs above Yosemite Valley as vibrant pink alpenglow colors paint the sky between El Capitan and Cathedral Rocks with stunning sunset colors as the scene reflects in the Merced River like a perfect mirror.

Alpenglow over Gates of the Valley and Yosemite Valley: A Journey into a Thin Place
Yosemite has long been my favorite spot. I grew up hearing about the beauty of Yosemite from my father. He raved about Ansel Adams, John Muir and the like. I heard stories of Yosemite's grandeur. I've been going there 3 to 5 times a year for close to 20 years. I could literally fill my gallery with nothing but Yosemite photos and never run out.
I still remember the day I took this, marveling at the beauty as the air literally glowed pink in front of me. Fog rose up from the fresh late autumn snow on the valley floor, as autumn colors still lined the trees along the river. Bridalveil Fall tumbled down the cliffs below Cathedral Rocks, as El Capitan and the entire scene reflected in the still waters of Merced River. It took me back to those days when I was younger, when I would hear my Dad tell me stories about the beauty of Yosemite.
My Dad passed away many years ago, but as I stood there amazed at the beauty in front of me I could almost see him. Right there in the snow, in front of the trees surrounded by the mist looking up at the cliffs and the pastel sunset. Alas, it was just a dream. Still, the thought brought a smile to my face as I looked up at this amazing view. I've made sure to not just tell my now 14 year old son about the beauty of Yosemite. He grew up heading to Yosemite with me from the time he was a few months old. By 3 years old, he wanted to carry a small tripod around when we walked around the valley. His first sledding experience was right here in Yosemite Valley on a small hill near Bridalveil Meadow and Bridalveil Fall. I have made sure he experiences the same wonder and magic of Yosemite I grew up hearing about from my Dad.
Now, every time I return to Yosemite, it feels like I am returning home to some place out of a wonderful dream. Of all the wondrous views I've ever seen in Yosemite, this one will always be one my favorites. Sometimes reality seems almost too perfect, and it surely felt that way this night as I stood there and marveled at the beauty which felt like the granite cathedrals of heaven opened up its gates and showed us all its wonders for a brief few moments.
