Spirit Falls and the Turquoise Waters of the Little White Salmon River in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington

The majestic turquoise waters of Spirit Falls gracefully flow over basalt cliffs, pouring over the edge and plunging down into a turquoise pool of water below on the Little White Salmon River deep in the forested canyons of the Columbia River Gorge in Washington. Spirit Falls is a plunge type waterfall 33 feet in height, and its distinctive look can range from a single powerful plunge spanning the full width of the falls to multiple distinct drops side by side depending on the season and water level.

The average flow rate of Spirit Falls has historically been 400 cubic feet per second (CFS), and the Little White Salmon River through here is runnable via kayak when the flow range is between 200-800 CFS. The falls and the river were protected by an act of congress in 1986, when they used the National Scenic Area Act to the protect the area from development by designating it part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. However, access to the area was restricted in early 2023 by SDS Lumber Company since part of the steep unofficial trail down to the falls crosses land they have owned since November 2021.

The trail itself was steep, with an elevation drop of over 800 feet down a 42.5% slope consisting of talus rock (confirmed by my Gaia GPS track years before the closure of access to the waterfall). The trail wasn't long with a length of 0.8 miles round trip, but the trail was dangerous and challenging not due to its length, but due to the aforementioned steep angled talus slope.

The turquoise water color here was magnificent, and it's one of the main reasons this place gained fame. What gives the Little White Salmon River its extraordinary turquoise color is not glacial flour. Unlike many turquoise rivers in the Canadian Rockies, this river has no glacier source. Instead, the color originates from dissolved calcium carbonate crystals that filter through limestone and basalt layers as groundwater feeds the river's springs in the Monte Cristo Range of the Cascade Mountains within Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The microscopic calcite particles suspended in the water absorb red and yellow wavelengths while scattering blue and green light back toward the surface, producing that vivid turquoise hue. The surrounding dark basalt canyon walls intensify the effect dramatically, acting as a natural black backdrop that makes the illuminated water appear to glow.

The turquoise water of Spirit Falls elegantly cascading over the basalt cliffs deep in the forested canyons of the Columbia River Gorge was easily one of the most stunning sights I've ever witnessed. Whether from River level as seen in my photo Spirit of the Glen or from the canyon rim as seen here, it was always a sight which made time stand still. I've lived 90 minutes from Spirit Falls my entire life, and have spent over 4 decades visiting the falls and the Gorge as a whole ever since I was a child. I'm truly grateful I was able to safely visit this place for many years before its access was restricted, and I'm thankful its beauty can still live on through the wonders of photography.

This image is available as a luxury museum-grade limited edition fine art print, part of James Mead's rare pre-closure documentation of Spirit Falls before public access was permanently restricted in 2023.

Historical Note - The Closure of Spirit Falls Access

This photograph was captured in April 2021, prior to the November 17, 2021 sale of the land historically owned by the Broughton Lumber Company. SDS Lumber Co., the primary landowner at the time, was acquired by a consortium consisting of Wilkins, Kaiser & Olsen, Inc. (WKO) and Twin Creeks Timber LLC (a Green Diamond Resource Company venture). Following the transition, longstanding public access to Spirit Falls was officially terminated in January 2023 due to liability and land management concerns. This image represents a rare documentation of a landscape that is no longer accessible under current regulations.

Note on Provenance - The Majesty of Spirit Falls from the Canyon Rim

Captured using the single exposure workflow of the "Mead Method," developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience. This image preserves a genuine, single moment in time executed entirely in the field without the use of composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
