Liquid Lace - Little White Salmon River Chaos Rapid Details Below Spirit Falls, Columbia River Gorge

Little White Salmon River, Columbia River Gorge, Washington

Little White Salmon River Chaos Class V Rapid Close Up Detailed View Below Spirit Falls in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington

Water flows over basalt rocks along the edge of the 8-foot ledge of Chaos, a notable Class V rapid on the Little White Salmon River, creating an illusion of soft lace as the Little White Salmon River makes its way down through the deep forest canyons of the Columbia River Gorge below Spirit Falls downstream towards the Columbia River below.

At close range, the chemistry behind the Little White Salmon River's turquoise color becomes even more apparent. Unlike glacially fed rivers such as the White River on Mount Hood that run milky white from coarse rock sediment, the Little White Salmon's clarity comes from dissolved calcium carbonate crystals filtered through limestone and basalt as groundwater feeds the river's springs. At this scale, the microscopic calcite particles visibly scatter blue and green wavelengths of light across the water surface, while the dark basalt beneath amplifies the effect, the water glowing with an almost supernatural turquoise luminescence against the black volcanic rock.

Chaos rapids are aptly named, as the flow over the 8 foot Chaos Ledge downstream from Spirit Falls, creating a notable barrier for kayaks attempting this challenging 4.2 mile Class V+ stretch of the Little White Salmon River. This powerful Class V rapid as been the site of multiple accidents and, according to local reports, has nearly claimed lives. It's a reminder that the beauty of this deep forested canyon comes with serious consequence for those who arrive unprepared.

Access to the Spirit Falls and Little White Salmon River at Chaos ledge is now restricted to kayakers who are brave enough to run the rapid. The steep, challenging unofficial trail was closed in early 2023 by the SDS Lumber Company, who purchased the land part of the unofficial trail runs through in November 2021. Even before the closure, accessing Chaos ledge was always a challenge. The unofficial trail was 0.8 miles round trip, but featured an elevation drop of over 800 feet down a 42.5% slope consisting of talus rock (confirmed by my Gaia GPS track years before the closure of access to the waterfall).

I've lived about 90 minutes away from these Class V rapids for over 4 decades, so I am grateful for the time I was able to spend here before its closure in early 2023. Chaos rapids and the Little White Salmon River was an absolutely magnificent sight. It's a place which combined the sheer fury and power of nature with an otherworldly feeling, and there was nothing quite like seeing the turquoise waters of the Little White Salmon River plunge over the 8 foot Chaos ledge in a display of pure ethereal beauty and grace.

This image is available as a luxury museum-grade limited edition fine art print, part of James Mead's rare pre-closure documentation of Spirit Falls before public access was permanently restricted in 2023.

Historical Note - Restricted Access to the Little White Salmon River Below Spirit Falls

This photograph was captured in April 2021, prior to the November 17, 2021 sale of the land historically owned by the Broughton Lumber Company. SDS Lumber Co., the primary landowner at the time, was acquired by a consortium consisting of Wilkins, Kaiser & Olsen, Inc. (WKO) and Twin Creeks Timber LLC (a Green Diamond Resource Company venture). Following the transition, longstanding public access to Spirit Falls was officially terminated in January 2023 due to liability and land management concerns. This image represents a rare documentation of a landscape that is no longer accessible under current regulations.

Note on Provenance - Close up Beauty of Chaos Rapid on the Little White Salmon River
