The Magic of Spirit Falls and the Little White Salmon River in the Spring in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington

Hidden deep in the forested canyons of the Columbia River Gorge, turquoise water flows 33 feet over a basalt ledge at Spirit Falls and into the pool below as the Little White Salmon River flows through the narrow channel in a canyon towards the Columbia River below.

The waterfall here is a spectacular sight to see, tumbling over the cliff at a 90 degree pitch. The look of the waterfall can change depending on the season and flow of the river, with normal flows producing multiple distinct drops side by side and high flow forming a single powerful plunge spanning the full width of the ledge. The average flow rate of Spirit Falls is 400 cubic feet per second (CFS), though it is runnable by experienced kayakers when the flow range is between 200-800 CFS.

Spirit Falls is part of a 4.2 mile Class V+ run along the Little White Salmon River. One of the hardest parts of this run is the Class V rapid Chaos which crashes over the 8 foot Chaos ledge just downstream from Spirit Falls, as seen in my photos Spillway and Liquid Lace.

The area was protected in 1986 when congress used the National Scenic Area Act to safeguard the area from development by designating it part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. However, access to Spirit Falls is now only possible via Kayak as the SDS Lumber Company, a subsidiary of Green Diamond Resource Company, restricted access in early 2023 due to the fact part of the steep unofficial trail down to the falls goes across land they have owned since November 2021.

Surprisingly, the access restriction only affects an approximately 250 foot final section of the trail near the canyon rim. The majority of the trail, which includes an elevation drop of over 800 feet down a 42.5% slope consisting of talus rock (confirmed by my Gaia GPS track years before the closure of access to the waterfall), is public land owned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery). The length of the trail was only 0.8 miles round trip, but steep angled talus slope made it challenging, especially so when hauling a large Gitzo Mountaineer tripod with a 3-way pan and tilt plus a 40 lbs backpack of camera gear down with you. It's ironic that this steep section crossed public land owned by the Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery, and it's the privately owned flatter section at the bottom above the river that effectively blocks public access.

Spirit Falls and the Little White Salmon River: What Causes the Enchanting Turquoise Color?

Ask a geologist why the Little White Salmon River runs turquoise and they'll give you a very different answer than the travel blogs do. The blogs say it's glacial flour, the pulverized rock dust suspended in melt water from glaciers that gives Banff and Patagonia their famous colors. The geologist will tell you that's impossible here: there are no glaciers in the Monte Cristo Range of the Cascade Mountains within Gifford Pinchot National Forest where the Little White Salmon originates. Glacial flour requires a glacier. There isn't one.

The actual mechanism is slower, quieter, and more interesting. Centuries of precipitation filter downward through porous limestone and basalt, dissolving microscopic calcium carbonate crystals grain by grain as the water works its way toward the water table. These calcite particles emerge with the groundwater through springs that feed the Little White Salmon River, suspended so finely they're invisible to the eye yet present in extraordinary concentrations. Sunlight hitting the water surface sets off a wavelength-specific reaction: red and yellow light is absorbed, blue and green light is scattered back upward in that signature turquoise glow. The dark Columbia River Basalt canyon walls surrounding Spirit Falls eliminate every competing light source, leaving the turquoise water as the only illuminated element in the scene. The effect isn't just beautiful. It's physics made visible.

It's this gorgeous turquoise glow the water has that makes this place so special. For my entire life, I've lived just 90 minutes from Spirit Falls, and I have spent over 4 decades visiting the falls and the Gorge for as long as I can remember. I grew up hiking to magical places like this with my Dad, and with access now restricted I'm thankful its beauty can still be enjoyed through the art of photography. When it's quiet enough, I can still close my eyes and feel Dad standing there with me.

Historical Note - The End of Access to Spirit Falls

This photograph was captured in April 2021, prior to the November 17, 2021 sale of the land historically owned by the Broughton Lumber Company. SDS Lumber Co., the primary landowner at the time, was acquired by a consortium consisting of Wilkins, Kaiser & Olsen, Inc. (WKO) and Twin Creeks Timber LLC (a Green Diamond Resource Company venture). Following the transition, longstanding public access to Spirit Falls was officially terminated in January 2023 due to liability and land management concerns. This image represents a rare documentation of a landscape that is no longer accessible under current regulations.

Note on Provenance - The Magic of Spirit Falls and its Turquoise Water
