Spirit Falls and the Turquoise Little White Salmon River in the Spring in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington
The stunning turquoise waters of the Little White Salmon River flows 33 feet over basalt cliffs with a 90 degree pitch at Spirit Falls, gracefully falling down into a pool of water below and into a narrow forest gorge surrounded by trees hidden deep in the forests of the Columbia River Gorge.
The waterfall's look varies by season and river flow, ranging from a single powerful plunge spanning the full width of the basalt cliffs to multiple distinct drops side by side. The average flow rate of Spirit Falls is 400 cubic feet per second (CFS), though it is runnable by experienced kayakers when the flow range is between 200-800 CFS. Spirit Falls is part of a 4.2 mile Class V+ run along the Little White Salmon River. One of the hardest parts of this run is the Class V rapid Chaos which crashes over the 8 foot Chaos ledge just downstream from Spirit Falls, as seen in my photo Spillway.
Spirit Falls and the Little White Salmon River were protected in 1986 through an act of congress when they used the National Scenic Area Act to designate it part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, ensuring the area was protected from development. However, access to the waterfall was restricted in early 2023 by SDS Lumber Company since part of the steep unofficial trail down to the falls crosses land they have owned since November 2021.
The unofficial trail down was steep and challenging, especially when lugging a 40 lbs backpack of camera gear and a large Gitzo Mountaineer tripod down with you. Although it was only 0.8 miles round trip in length, the route down consisted of going down a steep 42.5% talus slope with an elevation drop of over 800 feet down to the canyon rim below. There wasn't much keeping someone from tumbling all the way to the bottom if they slipped. The view in this photo was taken from the canyon rim just above where I took Everything Imagined at river level. The descent to river level often required bringing a rope all the way down to tie off at the rim of the canyon so you could safely lower yourself down to the river level in the canyon without slipping and falling (and to safely get back up and out of the canyon). The canyon walls down to river level were often wet and it would have been easy to slip on the final descent to the river, so on trips here without a rope this view from the canyon rim above the river was often a favorite.
The Turquoise Water of Spirit Falls: What Causes This Magical Color?
Few natural colors stop people in their tracks quite like the turquoise of the Little White Salmon River. Many assume it comes from glacial flour, the pulverized rock suspended in glacially fed rivers that creates the famous turquoise lakes of the Canadian Rockies. That assumption is geographically impossible here: the Little White Salmon has no glacier feeding it. The real explanation begins underground, where centuries of rainfall and snowmelt filter slowly through limestone and basalt in the Monte Cristo Range of the Cascade Mountains within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, dissolving microscopic calcium carbonate crystals along the way. These calcite particles enter the river through springs and remain suspended in the water column. Sunlight entering the water then does something remarkable: the longer red and yellow wavelengths are absorbed while the shorter blue and green wavelengths scatter back toward the surface, creating that electric turquoise color. Step into the narrow basalt canyon of the Columbia River Gorge and the effect intensifies further: the dark volcanic walls absorb ambient light from every direction, leaving only the glowing turquoise water to illuminate the scene.
It's this unique science and geology that makes Spirit Falls and the Little White Salmon River truly magnificent. It's mesmerizing to witness the stunning color of the river as the waterfall gracefully flows over the basalt cliffs and down into the forested canyon. I have lived 90 minutes from Spirit Falls my entire life, and have spent over 4 decades visiting the falls and the Gorge ever since I was young. Whether viewed from the rim as seen here and in my photo Jolly Rancher or from river level as seen in my photo Eye Candy, the sight of the turquoise waterfall and forest canyon was always enough to make time feel like it stood still. I'm thankful that I was able to safely visit Spirit Falls and enjoy this sight for so many years before access was restricted, and I'm truly grateful its beauty can still be enjoyed through the wonders of photography.

Historical Note - The Closure of Access to Spirit Falls
This photograph was captured in April 2021, prior to the November 17, 2021 sale of the land historically owned by the Broughton Lumber Company. SDS Lumber Co., the primary landowner at the time, was acquired by a consortium consisting of Wilkins, Kaiser & Olsen, Inc. (WKO) and Twin Creeks Timber LLC (a Green Diamond Resource Company venture). Following the transition, longstanding public access to Spirit Falls was officially terminated in January 2023 due to liability and land management concerns. This image represents a rare documentation of a landscape that is no longer accessible under current regulations.
