Spillway - Little White Salmon River Chaos Rapid Below Spirit Falls in the Columbia River Gorge

Little White Salmon River, Columbia River Gorge, Washington

Little White Salmon River Chaos Class V Rapid Below Spirit Falls in the Spring on the Washington Side of the Columbia River Gorge

Turquoise waters spill over the 8-foot ledge of Chaos, a notable Class V rapid on the Little White Salmon River, as the river continues downstream from Chaos ledge through the narrow forest canyon of the Columbia River Gorge towards the Columbia River below.

The extraordinary turquoise color of the Little White Salmon River comes not from glacial flour, the river has no glacier source, but from dissolved calcium carbonate crystals filtered through limestone and basalt as groundwater feeds the river's springs. These microscopic calcite particles scatter blue and green wavelengths of light while red and yellow are absorbed, creating the vivid turquoise color amplified by the dark basalt canyon walls surrounding it.

Chaos is aptly named. This powerful hydraulic keeper has been the site of multiple accidents and, according to local reports, has nearly claimed lives. It's a reminder that the beauty of this canyon comes with serious consequence for the unprepared.

Access to Chaos is now restricted to kayakers who are brave enough to run the rapid, as the steep, challenging trail down to the Little White Salmon River below Spirit Falls was closed in early 2023 by the SDS Lumber Company, who purchased the land part of the unofficial trail ran through in November 2021. The unofficial trail was 0.8 miles round trip, but featured an elevation drop of over 800 feet down a 42.5% slope consisting of talus rock (confirmed by my Gaia GPS track years before the closure of access to the waterfall). Whether by water or land, accessing Chaos ledge was always a challenge.

Chaos was an absolutely beautiful sight, and there was nothing quite like seeing the turquoise waters of the Little White Salmon River plunge over the 8 foot Chaos ledge in a display of pure ethereal beauty and grace. I've lived about 90 minutes away from these Class V rapids for over 4 decades, so I am grateful for the time I was able to spend here before its closure in early 2023.

This image is available as a luxury museum-grade limited edition fine art print, part of James Mead's rare pre-closure documentation of Spirit Falls before public access was permanently restricted in 2023.

The Little White Salmon River and the Thin Place of the Columbia River Gorge

The Little White Salmon River in the Columbia River Gorge is perhaps best known for Spirit Falls, but that extraordinary turquoise water is a stunning sight as it flows down the narrow canyon below the waterfall. It's a magical forest glen down here, an ethereal mix of green trees and plants, basalt rocks and cliffs and that magical turquoise glacier water. The way the water cascades over the basalt rocks reminded me of a magical spillway almost too perfect for this world. It's an odd feeling to have when standing at the foot of a spot in the river known as Chaos. If this is chaos, it sure is beautiful, perfect chaos.

It feels as if you've been transported from Earth into the wondrous forests of Heaven. It's a thin place, one of those places which feels like it blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth. You can almost feel the beauty of nature hug you as you stare out at all the wonders it bestows upon you down here. Time always slows down in a place like this, and it certainly did down here in the forested canyon next to the river. It's a colorful mix of elements all wrapped up in magnificent splendor. It takes a lot of effort to get down here, but then again beauty such as this rarely comes easy, and the reward is always worth it. I could have spent forever down there, lost in the forests of heaven next to the river where everything seems perfect and all your troubles melt away. Perhaps that's why I'll always find my way back to places like this: they always seem to heal the soul, which is fitting for a thin place almost too perfect for this world.

Historical Note - Restricted Access to the Little White Salmon River Below Spirit Falls

This photograph was captured in April 2021, prior to the November 17, 2021 sale of the land historically owned by the Broughton Lumber Company. SDS Lumber Co., the primary landowner at the time, was acquired by a consortium consisting of Wilkins, Kaiser & Olsen, Inc. (WKO) and Twin Creeks Timber LLC (a Green Diamond Resource Company venture). Following the transition, longstanding public access to Spirit Falls was officially terminated in January 2023 due to liability and land management concerns. This image represents a rare documentation of a landscape that is no longer accessible under current regulations.

Note on Provenance - The Beauty of the Chaos Rapid on the Little White Salmon River

Captured using the single exposure workflow of the "Mead Method," developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience.
