Whispering Cascade - Vidae Falls and Wildflower Sunset on the South Rim of Crater Lake National Park
Vidae Falls, East Rim Drive, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
Vidae Falls Cascades 120 feet down the Rim of the Crater Lake Caldera at Sunset as Wildflowers and Trees line the slopes in Crater Lake National Park
Vidae Falls cascades 120 feet over three horsetail tiers along Vidae Creek over a forested ridge filled with wildflowers above East Rim Drive at Crater Lake as the purple and magenta sunset glow lingers in the clouds above. Magenta Lewis' Monkeyflower (Erythranthe lewisii) wildflowers, purple Anderson's Lupine (Lupinus andersonii), yellow Arrowleaf Groundsel (Senecio triangularis var. triangularis) and white American Bistort (Bistorta bistortoides) (also known as Western Bistort) wildflowers grow along the slopes of the rim beside the waterfall. The moist air surrounding the waterfall allows vibrant green moss to grow on the rocks, which combines with the Mountain Hemlocks (Tsuga mertensiana) and Shasta Red Firs (Abies magnifica var. shastensis) growing along the rim near the top of the waterfall to create a vibrant, lush forest scene which combines the magic of a waterfall with wildflowers and Crater Lake National Park's classic high-altitude old-growth conifer forest canopy.
The rocks Vidae Falls flows over show some fantastic red, green and deep emerald colors between the lace like tiers of water that cascade down the slope of the rim. The cliffs here are composed of ancient andesite and dacite from Mount Mazama. Red dacite is visible, wet from the water flow and stained red through iron oxidation. It's mixed in alongside the darker colored andesite which lines the cliffs. A thick, vibrant green cushion of moss grows on the face of the rocks, as a thin layer of glass-like emerald colored microalgae covers the rock faces beneath the green moss. It's important to note that since none of this water ever sees its way into Crater Lake itself, the lake's waters remain pristine and unaffected.
Its brilliant color palette mixes with a beautiful waterfall forest scene along one of Oregon's most famous Volcanoes. Mount Mazama still exists as a volcano in the Cascade Range, and although its peak no longer exists, Crater Lake now fills its caldera which was formed after its violent eruption 7,700 years ago. Seeing a year round waterfall flow down the rim of this volcano, through a forest and over a bed of oxidized rock and lush moss, is truly a thing of beauty. It's a peaceful and serene scene, and seeing the soft pastels of sunset illuminate the clouds and the sky above is the perfect complement to the wonderful artist palette of color below. Tucked away above East Rim Drive below the South Rim of Crater Lake (as a compass points), Vidae Falls has always been one of my favorite spots in the park. It's a gorgeous, underrated gem in one of Oregon's most beautiful and unique landscapes.

Vidae Falls, Crater Lake National Park's Year Round Waterfall
Vidae Falls flows year round, though the flow decreases in the summer and autumn when it's typically accessible and most viewed. Vidae Creek is a spring fed creek which flows year round, and Vidae Falls originates along this creek. It's a tiered horsetail waterfall with three distinct tiers, the tallest of which is a 50 foot horsetail tier. The spring source originates from springs at the base of Applegate Peak's south shoulder, approximately one-sixth of a mile above Vidae Falls. These springs form as snowmelt and rainfall percolate downward through Crater Lake's porous pumice soil until reaching an impermeable volcanic layer, which diverts the water horizontally until it resurfaces as springs, a hydrological process documented in Crater Lake Nature Notes as early as 1935.
There's actually a lot of incorrect information online claiming Vidae Falls is on the East Rim of Crater Lake, which is factually incorrect. It is located on East Rim Drive, but its location is actually along the South Rim of Crater Lake, just Southeast of what would be the center of the South Rim as the compass points along the southern slopes of Applegate Peak, a bit southeast of the Applegate Peak summit itself.
The True Height of Vidae Falls: Why there is a Height Discrepancy Online
Vidae Falls suffers from severe foreshortening, which makes it easy to misrepresent its height when viewed from the roadside. Several sources online claim Vidae Falls is either a 100 foot tall waterfall or 115 foot tall waterfall; however the experienced surveyors at Northwest Waterfall Survey and World Waterfall Database have surveyed it and measured its height at a confirmed 120 feet tall across 3 distinct tiers. This marks its true, accurate height as measured by experienced surveyors. Standard tourism blogs and websites rely on what is casually visible from the roadside and round down to 100 feet or 115 feet. Both Northwest Waterfall Survey and World Waterfall Database, who physically surveyed and cataloged Vidae Falls in person, confirm the total height at 120 feet across 3 distinct horsetail tiers, the most authoritative measurement available.
