Warm sunset colors light the skies over Crater Lake and Wizard Island from Discovery Point as the alpenglow illuminates Llao Rock and part of the water.

Bewitched - Vibrant Sunset over Wizard Island, Crater Lake, and Llao Rock from Discovery Point

Discovery Point, West Rim, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Orange, Red and Magenta Sunset over Wizard Island and Crater Lake from Discovery Point in Crater Lake National Park

Sunset lights the skies over Crater Lake and Wizard Island with vibrant colors as alpenglow illuminates the summit of Llao Rock as it rises up from the caldera between Llao Bay and Steel Bay. Grouse Hill peeks out from behind the rim above Wizard Island, as the colors of sunset light the sky and clouds as they reflect off the deep blue waters of Crater Lake. Bits of snow still line the steep slopes of the caldera wall, as it descends 924 feet (Discovery Point elevation minus Crater Lake surface level) from Discovery Point down to the surface level of Crater Lake. Whitebark Pine (Pinus albicaulis) and Mountain Hemlock trees (Tsuga mertensiana) line the left side of steep v-shaped slope down to the water, as the tops of a few Hemlock trees rise above the volcano rock lining the right side. The oranges, reds and magenta of sunset mix with the cobalt blue waters of Crater Lake to create a stunning color palette as the day draws to a close.

The imposing cliff of Llao Rock dominates the northwestern caldera wall, a massive flow of rhyodacite lava up to 1,200 feet thick, erupted approximately 7,900 years ago, just 100-200 years before Mount Mazama's catastrophic caldera-forming eruption. The USGS Geologic Map of Mount Mazama classifies it as rhyodacite, a lava with high silica content sitting between dacite and rhyolite in composition, explaining its steep, columnar cliff face visible across the lake.

Crater Lake from Discovery Point: Sunset Above Wizard Island at Oregon's Only National Park

I've always loved Crater Lake, it's such a unique kind of beauty. The caldera stretches 6 miles across, has no outflow and is filled entirely with snowmelt and runoff. As a result, it's the clearest, cleanest water in the world. The water takes on a deep cobalt blue color which has to be seen to be believed. There's nothing quite like standing at the edge of the caldera, staring out at that beautiful, deep cobalt blue water stretching 6 miles across. At sunset, the colors softly glow on the horizon and the skies above the caldera as bits of color reflect on the water, mixing with the cobalt blue. Scenes like this in places like this are almost too perfect for this world. They have the feeling of a thin place, one of those rare places and moments that seem to blur the lines between heaven and Earth. Time stands still as the colors transform the scene for one unique kind of beauty into something spectacular in an entirely different manner. The way it all comes together is a moment of true serenity and peace. No matter how many times I visit this wondrous place, my jaw drops just like it did the first time I ever laid eyes on it and I know I'll always find my way back to this beautiful place.

The History of Discovery Point and Crater Lake

Discovery Point is the spot where gold prospector John Wesley Hillman first laid eyes on the Crater Lake caldera in 1853. He was 21 years old, and at the suggestion of his companion Isaac Skeeters he initially named it Deep Blue Lake, though their discovery was soon forgotten as they found no gold here. It was soon forgotten until October 21, 1862 when Chauncey Nyre was leading a party of prospectors and came upon the lake. He named it Blue Lake, thinking he was the first to discover it. In August 1865, it was "discovered" again by two soldiers stationed at Fort Klamath who named it Lake Majesty. Four years later in 1869, it was finally given the name we know it by today: Crater Lake.

In August 1885, William G Steel of Kansas finally made it to Crater Lake and stood on the rim after longing to see it for 15 years. He would become instrumental in Crater Lake becoming a National Park. Inspired by the beauty of this place, he birthed the idea of Crater Lake becoming a National Park. For 17 years he campaigned for Crater Lake to become a National Park. On May 22, 1902 his efforts were rewarded and Crater Lake would become the nation's fifth National Park: Crater Lake National Park, Oregon's first and only National Park. Steel would serve as park commissioner from 1902 until his passing in 1934 at the age of 80. Steel's efforts to preserve this magnificent place are one of the main reasons it is here for us to enjoy today.
