Peace - Comet Neowise over Mount Hood and the White River as a Perseid Meteor Streaks across the Sky
White River, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Comet NEOWISE and a Perseid Meteor over Mount Hood and the White River in the Mount Hood National Forest of Oregon
Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) shines bright in the starry skies above Mount Hood, Timberline, the Palmer Glacier (now technically the Palmer Snowfield) and the glacial White River during astronomical twilight as a Perseid Meteor streaks across the sky north of the mountain. Mount Hood rises above the White River as the river flows through a channel cut into the rock and boulder field of the flood plain below the White River Glacier. The Newton Clark Glacier can be seen on the eastern slopes of Mount Hood, as Illumination Rock and Crater Rock rise up on the southern and southwest slopes of the mountain.
The White River originates at the foot of the White River Glacier, and it gets its name due to the chalky, milky appearance its water takes on as a result of the glacial flour from the White River Glacier getting suspended in the water as it travels downstream from the glacier on Mount Hood. As the river flows through the White River Canyon, it cuts through a large boulder field in the river's floodplain, as the trees of the Mount Hood National Forest cover the slopes of both sides of the canyon walls as they rise above the river.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Comet NEOWISE above Mount Hood, the White River and White River Canyon as a Perseid Meteor races across the sky above. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
The Peace of Night on Mount Hood, Oregon's Grandest Alpine Cathedral
Mount Hood is one of my favorite spots in my home state, so it's only natural I would end up photographing Comet NEOWISE up here from several locations over the course of 3 weeks. I love the peaceful feeling of the water flowing down from the mountain with the backdrop of NEOWISE in the skies above. It's a very tranquil setting below Mount Hood standing next to the White River in the White River Canyon, though the large boulders present means you have to tread carefully when hiking here, especially in the dark. I particularly love how the river flows over this log trapped beneath boulders on either side of the river. It's a peaceful sight, especially hearing the water gracefully cascade through the canyon and down the lower slopes of Mount Hood.
There's something magical about the calming sound of rushing water as the cold alpine breeze brushes against your cheeks, especially when a magical sight like Comet NEOWISE and the Perseid Meteor shower fill the skies overhead. Even though the meteor shower was not near its peak, it can still produce wonderful meteors, and I was thrilled to witness White River flow down from Mount Hood as the comet and meteor raced across the transitioning skies above. This was a little over a week into the meteor shower, well before the peak of it in mid-August. The meteor shower actually lasts for about 6 weeks, though the famous peak of it is about 4 weeks into it. It was quite a treat to see the lone meteor in the sky, parallel with NEOWISE high above Mount Hood and the White River below.
It was about 21 minutes into astronomical twilight, and the blue hues from nautical twilight were fading fast as the stars came out and the skies began to transition towards the dark of night. I've always enjoyed the transition period from nautical dusk to true night, so I left my tripod set up since I knew the rapidly approaching light shift would soon produce a wonderfully different scene. A mere 12 minutes later, I took my photo Flow, and the shift from the deep blue present in this photo to the midnight blue with a hint of purple just 12 minutes later was truly fascinating to witness. The skies always shift from deep blue to midnight blue with a hint of purple before the dark of night takes hold, and no matter how many times I see this transition it always takes my breath away.
There's always peace to be found in the mountains, especially near water. The air near the water always takes on a distinct chill, and it really makes my soul feel alive as the wonders of nature unfold in front of me as Oregon's grandest alpine cathedral rises towards the heavens above in all its splendor. The cold mountain air always seems to cleanse my soul, and whatever worries I have seem to melt away as the beauty of nature unfolds before me. I grew up a little over an hour from here, and over 4 decades later I still live about an hour away. Mount Hood is a thin place which feels like it blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth, and it's that unique beauty that feels like you’re in the mountains of heaven which always keep me coming back. No matter how many times I've been here, the sight of Oregon's grandest alpine cathedral always takes my breath away.

Technical Note - The Art of Low Level Lighting
Foreground illumination was achieved using precise LLL (Low Level Lighting) consistent across all 5 focus stacked frames, which achieves a balance between Comet NEOWISE, the night sky, Mount Hood and the White River. I’ve ensured the relationship between Mount Hood, the White River, the trees, and Comet NEOWISE remains authentic to the moment and properly balanced.
Note on Provenance
Comet NEOWISE will not return to our solar system for another 6800 years (in approximately the year 8820 AD), making photos of Comet NEOWISE far more than just a once in a lifetime experience. Captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of nightscape experience. No trackers, no sky-swaps, and no generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
