Comet NEOWISE over Mount Hood and the White River during Astronomical Twilight, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) rises into the night sky above Mount Hood and the White River during astronomical twilight as stars blanket the night sky. The White River flows down from its headwaters just below White River Glacier, cutting a channel through a field of large rocks and boulders in White River Canyon on the southeast flank of Mount Hood. The mountain rises up above the canyon and the surrounding Mount Hood National Forest as Illumination Rock and Crater Rock rise up from its slopes.

The White River is a glacial river fed by snow and ice melt from the White River Glacier, which causes the waters to carry large amounts of glacial silt. This gives the river the milky white appearance for which it is named. Seeing the river flow down through the flood plain in the White River Canyon, through the boulder field and over a small log has always been one of my favorite views in this place. It's a very serene sight, and the sound of the rushing water is magical when set against the sound of a slight breeze running through the canyon.

A slight glow held on up high on the snow-covered Newton Clark Glacier, White River Glacier and Palmer Glacier (now technically the Palmer Snowfield), which was amazing to witness under the sky full of stars. Comet NEOWISE streaks overhead above Palmer Glacier and Timberline, as Cooper Spur juts out from the slopes of Mount Hood on the opposite side of the mountain. I've been visiting Mount Hood for most of my life, and this has always been one of my favorite places. It's beautiful in the winter and in the summer, but witnessing it as the comet shined brightly in the night sky is something I'll never forget.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Comet NEOWISE above Mount Hood, the White River and White River Canyon as astronomical twilight transitions to night. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

Comet NEOWISE, Mount Hood and the Magical Transition to Night

Chasing NEOWISE around Oregon and Washington while photographing this once in a lifetime event for 3 weeks was one of the highlights of my life. I drove over 6,000 miles, spending many nights sleeping in the back of my vehicle. This photo was actually taken about 12 minutes after a very similar one I took here that night. I've always found how the light changes as the skies darken fascinating, so after taking my photo Peace I left my tripod set up and waited for the light in the sky to darken a little more before taking this one. It's amazing to compare the shifting twilight as night approaches, as the darkening of the skies and the color change happens fast once the sun reaches far below the horizon.

At this point, the sun was -15.4 degrees below the horizon. The sun was -14.5 degrees below the horizon for my photo peace mentioned above. It's amazing how just 12 minutes and -0.9 degrees difference changes how the light falls on the landscape and in the sky. As nautical twilight gives way to astronomical twilight, the skies began to darken from a blue to a darker shade as night gets closer. The way the light falls on the landscape shifts, and it creates a different mood.

During the NEOWISE chase, I would drive wherever the photo for the next night would line up. This photo was taken at about the mid-point on my NEOWISE chase, after driving clear back across the state from the previous night to get to this location. Despite the long nights and short sleep, this will always be an experience I look back on fondly. It was one of the highlights of my career. There's something magical about the wonders of the night sky, but witnessing the beauty as the comet streaked across the sky was a moment where time seemed to stand still and the universe unveiled its full grandeur in the skies above.

Comet NEOWISE will not return to our solar system for another 6800 years (in approximately the year 8820 AD), making photos of Comet NEOWISE far more than just a once in a lifetime experience. Captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of nightscape experience. No trackers, no sky-swaps, and no generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
