Airglow and Comet NEOWISE Setting behind the Summit of Mount Hood from Bennett Pass in the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon

Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) sets behind the summit of Mount Hood and Crater Rock as green airglow illuminates the skies above Bennett Pass and the Mount Hood National Forest below. The Newton Clark Glacier and the White River Glacier blanket the slopes of the mountain as Cooper Spur juts out from the mountain's northeast face.

Headlights from a passing semi-truck illuminate the trees and the meadows surrounding Bennett Pass as the passing truck leaves light trails on the roadway below. The comet's coma kisses the upper slopes of Mount Hood as it prepares to set behind the mountain, while the dust tail and ion tail shine brightly against the green and yellow airglow above the mountain.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Comet NEOWISE and green airglow above Mount Hood, Crater Rock, the Mount Hood National Forest and Bennett Pass. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

Experiencing the Wonders of Mount Hood, Comet NEOWISE and Bennett Pass with my Mom

This one was taken about halfway into my 3 week, 6,000 mile Comet NEOWISE chase where I'd often sleep in the back of my vehicle as I traveled from location to location across the Pacific Northwest. I'd calculated a week or so earlier the comet would set near the summit and Crater Rock over a narrow range of a few days, so as soon as I noticed the weather looked favorable I made the note to head back to Mount Hood for this photo. On the way to Mount Hood, I swung by home to drop off my wife and son while picking up my then 74 year old Mom to join me, as she had mentioned wanting to see Comet NEOWISE out in nature and witnessing it above Mount Hood was something she wanted to see.

After dropping off my wife and son, my Mom joined me in my vehicle as we traveled up to Mount Hood to view and photograph Comet NEOWISE. As we arrived the air was cold and crisp, just how I like it. The first thing I noticed after we arrived and set up at our viewing location was what looked like a hint of airglow in the sky. If you spend enough time out in nature under the dark skies, you learn to notice slight shifts which often indicate airglow is present even if our eyes alone can't perceive it due to the way they work at night. The comet was shining brightly, easily visible to the naked eye as it danced across the dark skies above Mount Hood and Bennett Pass.

My Mom grew up in Alaska, so she was thrilled to be under the dark skies up at Mount Hood enjoying all its wonders once again. She's lived in Oregon for well over 50 years, and I grew up heading to the mountain with Mom and Dad to enjoy all the beauty it has to offer. Over 4 decades later, I was honored to be able to share this magical experience with my Mom, who is one of the main people responsible for my love for the nature, the outdoors, and Mount Hood.

There was magic in the air this night, as Comet NEOWISE danced in the heavens above Mount Hood as green airglow illuminated the sky. Growing up, Mount Hood along with the Oregon Coast and the Columbia River Gorge was one of my first loves. Places like Mount Hood always instill an ethereal sense of wonder in my soul. The air is clean, crisp and cold and the natural beauty surrounding me feels like a thin place straight out of the mountains of Heaven. I suppose that's why decades after I first laid eyes on this magical alpine wonderland, Mount Hood still remains one of my favorite places on Earth.
