Spirit Falls and the Turquoise Waters of the Little White Salmon River in the Spring in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington
The turquoise water of the Little White Salmon River flows over basalt cliffs at Spirit Falls in Washington, down into a turquoise pool of water below deep in the forested canyons of the Columbia River Gorge. The plunge type waterfall flows 33 feet with a 90 degree pitch over the cliffs, surrounded by the lush, green forest that the Gorge is known for.
Depending on water level and season, the waterfall's distinctive look can range from a single powerful plunge spanning the full width of the falls to multiple distinct drops side by side. The Little White Salmon River at Spirit Falls has an average flow rate of 400 cubic feet per second (CFS), and 4.2 mile Class V+ run along the river here is runnable via kayak when the flow range is between 200-800 CFS. The Class V Chaos Rapid is found just downstream from the waterfall here in a spot where the river drops over an 8-foot ledge that spans the width of the entire river, as seen in my photo Spillway.
Spirit Falls and the Little White Salmon River were protected in 1986 by an act of congress when they used the National Scenic Area Act to protect the area from development by designating it part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Access to the waterfall and the Chaos Rapid is now only possible via Kayak, as the SDS Lumber Company, a subsidiary of Green Diamond Resource Company, restricted access in early 2023 since part of the steep unofficial trail down to the falls goes across land they have owned since November 2021.
Remarkably, the access restriction affects only the final approximately 250 feet of the trail near the canyon rim; the majority of the route down to Spirit Falls crosses public land owned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery). A small parcel of privately owned SDS Lumber Company land at the bottom of the descent, acquired in November 2021 from Broughton Lumber Company, effectively blocks all public foot access to the falls.
The trail down to this portion on the bottom is steep, with an elevation drop of over 800 feet down a 42.5% slope consisting of talus rock (confirmed by my Gaia GPS track years before the closure of access to the waterfall). The trail wasn't long with a length of 0.8 miles round trip, but the trail was dangerous and challenging not due to its length but due to the aforementioned steep angled talus slope, especially when hauling a 40 lbs backpack of camera gear and a large Gitzo Mountaineer tripod with a 3-way pan and tilt head down with you. It's ironic that this challenging section crossed public land owned by the Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery, and it's the privately owned flatter section at the bottom above the river that effectively blocks public access. If you have a kayak, you can still run the river to this spot as the river is a public waterway, but unfortunately being a Class V+ run that's not something most people can do.
The Magic of Spirit Falls and its Turquoise Color
Stand at the edge of Spirit Falls and the color of the water will stop you cold. That deep, luminous turquoise looks like something out of a fantasy, and people naturally reach for the easiest explanation: glacial flour, the fine mineral suspension that colors the famous lakes of the Canadian Rockies and Patagonia. It's a reasonable guess, but a wrong one. The Little White Salmon River originates in the Monte Cristo Range of the Cascade Mountains within Gifford Pinchot National Forest, a landscape with no glaciers. The color has an entirely different origin.
Deep beneath the surface, rainwater and snowmelt spend years filtering through layers of limestone and basalt, slowly dissolving microscopic calcium carbonate crystals. These calcite particles travel with the water as it emerges through springs to feed the Little White Salmon River, remaining suspended invisibly in the current. When sunlight penetrates the water column, it triggers a selective optical process. Red and yellow wavelengths are absorbed, while blue and green wavelengths scatter upward and outward, producing that vivid turquoise glow. The dark basalt walls of the Columbia River Gorge canyon complete the effect, eliminating competing light sources and allowing the turquoise to dominate the scene with almost supernatural intensity.
It's this breathtaking turquoise color flowing through the forested canyons of the Columbia River Gorge that makes Spirit Falls and the Little White Salmon River so unique. Witnessing nature’s majesty deep in these hallowed canyons feels like you've been transported into the forests of Heaven. Whether you're on the canyon rim as seen here looking down on the waterfall in all its majesty, or down at river level experiencing its wonders like in my photo Spirit of the Glen, this is a place that makes time stand still. I have lived 90 minutes from Spirit Falls my entire life, and have spent over 4 decades visiting the falls and the Gorge ever since I was young. I grew up hiking to places like this with my Dad, and now that access is restricted I'm truly grateful its beauty can still be enjoyed through the wonders of photography. Whenever I close my eyes I can still take myself back to this magical place, and when it's quiet enough I can still feel Dad standing there with me, just like when I was young.

Historical Note - The End of Access to Spirit Falls
This photograph was captured in April 2021, prior to the November 17, 2021 sale of the land historically owned by the Broughton Lumber Company. SDS Lumber Co., the primary landowner at the time, was acquired by a consortium consisting of Wilkins, Kaiser & Olsen, Inc. (WKO) and Twin Creeks Timber LLC (a Green Diamond Resource Company venture). Following the transition, longstanding public access to Spirit Falls was officially terminated in January 2023 due to liability and land management concerns. This image represents a rare documentation of a landscape that is no longer accessible under current regulations.
