Spirit Falls and the Little White Salmon River's Turquoise Water in the Springtime in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington
Surrounded by trees hidden deep in the forest, turquoise water flows over a basalt ledge at Spirit Falls and into the turquoise pool of water below, as the Little White Salmon River makes its way through the narrow channel in the canyon deep in the forests of the Columbia River Gorge. Chaos, a Class V Rapid seen in my photo Spillway is just downstream from here, where it crosses the 8-foot Chaos ledge that stretches across the width of the river.
Spirit Falls gracefully flows 33 feet over the cliffs from the Columbia River Basalt Group here, dropping over the edge at a 90 degree pitch. The Little White Salmon River has an average flow rate of 400 cubic feet per second (CFS) here, and 4.2 mile Class V+ run along the river which includes Spirit Falls is runnable by experienced kayakers when the flow range is between 200-800 CFS.
The area around Spirit Falls and the Little White Salmon River was protected by an act of congress in 1986 when they used the National Scenic Area Act to protect the area from development by designating it part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. However, access to the waterfall and the Chaos rapid is now only possible via Kayak as the SDS Lumber Company, a subsidiary of Green Diamond Resource Company, restricted access in early 2023 since part of the steep unofficial trail down to the falls crosses land they have owned since November 2021.
The majority of the trail crosses public land owned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery). It's only a small parcel of privately owned SDS Lumber Company land at the bottom of the descent, acquired in November 2021 from Broughton Lumber Company, effectively blocks all public foot access to the falls. It's approximately 250 feet of land near the bottom of the trail which effectively blocks all public foot access to the falls.
The trail itself to get down to this portion of land at the bottom was steep with an elevation drop of over 800 feet down a 42.5% slope consisting of talus rock (confirmed by my Gaia GPS track years before the closure of access to the waterfall). Ironically, it isn't this steep stretch that closed off access. The trail wasn't long, coming in at 0.8 miles round trip, but the steep decent made it challenging and dangerous, especially when you haul a 40 lbs backpack of camera gear and a large Gitzo Mountaineer tripod with a 3-way pan and tilt head down the slope with you. For those people fortunate enough to posses the skill level to run a Class V+ kayak run, visiting the falls is still doable. But for the rest of us, it's game over thanks to Green Diamond Resource Company and their 250 feet of land.
Turquoise Magic in the Forest Glen at Spirit Falls
The turquoise color of the Little White Salmon River at Spirit Falls is one of those rare natural phenomena that photographs simply cannot do justice to, you have to stand there and see it to truly believe it. The instinctive explanation most people reach for is glacial flour, the suspended mineral particles that give Canadian Rockies and Patagonian lakes their famous turquoise color. It's an understandable assumption, but the Little White Salmon River has no glacier in its watershed. The geology here tells a completely different story.
The color originates not from ice, but from water's long journey through rock. For years, precipitation slowly percolates through limestone and basalt layers deep in the Monte Cristo Range of the Cascade Mountains within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, gradually dissolving microscopic calcium carbonate crystals in the process. By the time this groundwater emerges through springs to form the Little White Salmon River, it carries an invisible load of calcite particles in suspension. These particles are the key: small enough to remain suspended indefinitely, yet large enough to interact with light in a very specific way, absorbing the longer red and yellow wavelengths while reflecting blue and green wavelengths back toward the surface. The result is that extraordinary turquoise color. Enclosed within the dark basalt walls of the Columbia River Gorge canyon, with competing light sources absorbed by the volcanic rock on every side, the color reaches an intensity that feels less like a river and more like liquid gemstone.
Standing at the edge of these magical turquoise waters is truly a thing of beauty, and it's a sight that will stop you in your tracks and make time stand still. For my entire life, I have lived just 90 minutes from Spirit Falls and I have spent over 4 decades visiting the falls and the Gorge ever since I was young. I grew up hiking to places like this in the Gorge with my Dad. All these years later, I can still close my eyes and feel Dad standing there with me, just like we would when I was young. Now that access has been restricted I'm truly thankful this spectacular place can still be enjoyed through the magic of photography.

Historical Note - The End of Access to Spirit Falls
This photograph was captured in April 2021, prior to the November 17, 2021 sale of the land historically owned by the Broughton Lumber Company. SDS Lumber Co., the primary landowner at the time, was acquired by a consortium consisting of Wilkins, Kaiser & Olsen, Inc. (WKO) and Twin Creeks Timber LLC (a Green Diamond Resource Company venture). Following the transition, longstanding public access to Spirit Falls was officially terminated in January 2023 due to liability and land management concerns. This image represents a rare documentation of a landscape that is no longer accessible under current regulations.
