Edge of Night - Comet NEOWISE over Mount Hood and the White River at Nautical Dusk
White River, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Comet NEOWISE at Nautical Dusk over Mount Hood and the White River, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) makes its first appearance of the night as it begins to appear in the sky above Mount Hood and the White River at nautical dusk as the river gracefully flows down White River Canyon, through the boulder field and over a fallen log. Snow blankets the White River Glacier, the Newton Clark Glacier and the Palmer Glacier (now technically the Palmer Snowfield) as the stars make their first appearance in the darkening skies above the Mount Hood National Forest and Mount Hood. Cooper Spur juts out from the northeast side of the mountain while Illumination Rock, Illumination Saddle and Crater Rock rise up on the south and southwest slopes of the mountain.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Comet NEOWISE above Mount Hood, the White River and White River Canyon at nautical dusk as the sky begins its transition to night. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
Chasing Comet NEOWISE above Mount Hood and the White River
I've been visiting Mount Hood since I was barely old enough to walk. I've always loved this spot, in the winter it's a magical snowfield and in the summertime it's beautiful to watch the White River flow through the boulder field. When Comet NEOWISE made its appearance in the skies for the first time in 6800 years, I knew I had to plan something special.
The White River gets its name from the milky white color of its water. Glacial flour from the White River Glacier grinding on the rocks underneath the glacier makes its way into the waters of the White River, suspended in the water as it flows down the mountain. The way the milky white water weaves its way through the boulder field and over the rocks is quite beautiful, and this specific section of the river features a log straddling the width of the river which makes for a fantastic foreground compositional element.
There was a faint yellowish-white glow left on the horizon as Comet NEOWISE streaked across the darkening skies. The light gradually faded to the deep blue color of nautical dusk blanketing the skies above Mount Hood, as NEOWISE made its first appearance of the night perfectly placed in a break between two clouds. The complementary colors in the scene were quite stunning. It was a vintage summer night on Mount Hood, the same type of night I've always enjoyed up here except this time the wonders of the night sky streaked overhead in a once in a lifetime appearance.
There's something about moments like this which makes time stand still. I've always felt Mount Hood is a thin place which blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth, so witnessing the beauty of Oregon's crown jewel as Comet NEOWISE shined brightly in the heavens above was a truly stunning sight. The sound of the White River flowing over the rocks and the log here is always tranquil and soothing, and the stars overhead rising above Mount Hood always seem to wrap my soul in a warm blanket as I take in the wonder of nature in all its beauty.
I ended up chasing Comet NEOWISE for 3 weeks until it faded back into the deep recesses of the solar system for the next 6800 years, and I visited Mount Hood on many occasions during those 3 weeks. I drove over 6,000 miles during those 3 weeks, sleeping in my car every night. I planned every night out a day or two before based on the weather, and from one night to the next I often found myself driving clear across the state. It's been years since that magical summer chasing NEOWISE while the world was shut down from the pandemic, but it's a summer I'll never forget. Mount Hood was one of my first loves as a child, and witnessing the comet at the edge of night in the skies above my beloved Mount Hood is something I'll cherish forever.

Technical Note - The Art of Low Level Lighting and Focus Stacking on a Panoramic
Achieving a balance between the foreground rocks, the White River, Mount Hood and the trees of the Mount Hood National Forest required precise LLL (Low Level Lighting). Focus stacking was utilized to ensure sharp depth of field throughout the frame.
This high-resolution vertical panoramic stitch [1:1 aspect ratio] consists of 5 single exposure images all taken at the exact same settings using a nodal rail and L-bracket on a 3-way pan and tilt panoramic head for nodal point accuracy, ensuring the final image preserves museum-grade detail and resolution across the entire frame, from the textures of the landscape to the astronomical details in the sky.
Note on Provenance
Comet NEOWISE will not return to our solar system for another 6800 years (in approximately the year 8820 AD), making photos of Comet NEOWISE far more than just a once in a lifetime experience. Captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of nightscape experience. No trackers, no sky-swaps, and no generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
