Fantasyland - Winter Alpenglow Sunset on El Capitan, Cathedral Rocks, Yosemite Valley & Tunnel View
Tunnel View, Yosemite National Park, California
Winter Alpenglow at Sunset over El Capitan, Cathedral Rocks, Cathedral Spires, Bridalveil Fall and Yosemite Valley from Tunnel View in Yosemite National Park
Alpenglow at Sunset lights the clouds in the sky above and the snow covered cliffs of El Capitan, Cathedral Rocks and Cathedral Spires with soft pastel magenta and orange colors above Tunnel View as Bridalveil Fall tumbles 620 feet towards the winter wonderland in Yosemite Valley below. Fresh snow blankets the trees of Yosemite Valley and the granite cliffs of El Capitan, Cathedral Rocks, Cathedral Spires, and Sentinel Rock as Half Dome, Clouds Rest and the top of Sentinel Dome lie covered in a veil of clouds. Alpenglow illuminates the rock face of El Capitan, the Leaning Tower and the snow covered slopes of El Capitan, Cathedral Rocks and the lower slopes of Sentinel Dome as Bridalveil Fall takes on a slight golden hue.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures alpenglow at sunset over snow covered El Capitan, Cathedral Rocks, Bridalveil Fall, Tunnel View and Yosemite Valley. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Tunnel View and Yosemite National Park, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
Sunset in Wonderland: A Winter Fairytale in Yosemite National Park
"Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again"
C.S. Lewis
When I was a young child, I would play outside in the forest behind my Dad's house. I had a tree fort down by the creek, and I made a fort in the blackberry thicket behind our backyard fence. I used to make magical fantasylands with talking Koalas and other magical talking animals. The posters in my bedroom were the portal into their world. I loved watching the animated Puff the Magic Dragon and the animated The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe movie. I absolutely loved winter, so I'd pretend many of my adventures took place in a magical winter wonderland.
It was childhood imagination and wonder at its finest. As I became a teenager, my Dad bought me a Canon SLR 35mm film camera and I started taking photos and learning photography. But as I transitioned from teenager to young adult, the calls came from every direction. All the school counselors, my teachers, and everyone else at school said the same thing: I heard it was time to grow up, put the camera down, leave the world of imagination behind and start getting ready for college.
And so it was, just as Jackie left Puff the Magic Dragon to grow up, I put my creativity behind me and headed off to college. A decade later I had 4 college degrees, three associate’s degrees and a bachelor’s degree. I had graduated with honors at the top of my class, and I was all set for a lifetime and successful, lucrative career in supply chain. But, as I started my career with good pay and decades of supply chain in front of me, I felt empty.
I suppose that imagination and wonder that Puff the Magic Dragon represented never really left me. On the way home from the SEMA Show one day I stopped in the mountains along Nevada 318 at 5,000 feet in late November to take a rest. I had a raging case of strep throat and was just trying to make it home to see my doctor. As I gazed out at the winter wonderland in front of me, I saw alpenglow lighting the mountains and the skies above in glorious pastel magenta light. I pulled out my DSLR I used to take pictures of cars and took a photo of that glorious winter scene. When I got home, I walked away from my career. I'd found my calling. I wanted to be a full time professional fine art landscape photographer. So, I walked away with zero safety net and went full time into this with zero backup options.
Decades later, I'm still here. That childhood love for a beautiful fantasyland never really left me. It just lay dormant, waiting for inspiration to pull me out of my figurative cave. I grew up hearing stories about the beauty of Yosemite National Park from my father. He would rave about Ansel Adams and the majestic beauty of Yosemite. It would go on to become my fantasyland as a full time professional. I'd drive 750 miles each way 4-5 times a year to visit. One year I drove down three separate times in one month. I found my calling that day in the Nevada Mountains, but it was Yosemite which would become my muse.
There's nothing quite as beautiful as fresh snow in Yosemite at sunset. It covers the landscape in a blanket of soft white snow as the snow and ice drape the granite cliffs of nature's holiest cathedral in a veil of white. When that gorgeous, soft alpenglow light hits at sunset and refuses to leave, it's like something out of a fairytale. The granite cliffs of this winter wonderland take on a warm, magenta and orange light as soft pastels bathe the skies above in ethereal light while a veil of fog envelopes the tops of the cliffs. It's like a winter sunset in Heaven. Yosemite is a thin place that blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth; when that fresh snow arrives and lights up at sunset it's like you've stepped into the valleys of heaven surrounded by heavenly granite cathedrals walls.
I live for moments like this, when the lines between Heaven and Earth get blurred and time seems to stand still. There's magic in the air which always seems to calm my soul, and that's one of the reasons I've always returned to Yosemite, especially in the winter. It's a beauty too perfect for this world. I suppose my childhood love for beautiful fairytale worlds covered in winter beauty never really left me, it just lay waiting dormant until I got old enough to find it again. And find it I did, in Yosemite Valley and its hallowed granite cathedral walls, the same place I grew up hearing my father tell me wonderful stories about. C.S. Lewis was right: some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. I finally was, only this time I made a career out of finding them, photographing their beauty and sharing it with the world. Yosemite in the winter is straight out of a fairytale, and that's why I'll always find my way back here.
