Shimmering Brilliance - Milky Way and Perseid meteor over Cloudcap Bay and Crater Lake from Cloudcap

Cloudcap Overlook, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

The Milky Way over Cloudcap Bay and Crater Lake from Cloudcap Overlook in Crater Lake National Park

The Milky Way rises high into the night sky above Cloudcap Bay, Cloudcap Overlook and Crater Lake as meteors from Perseid meteor shower streak across the sky. Sentinel Rock and Kerr Notch rise up prominently below Cloudcap from the east and southeast rim, as the Milky Way rises straight up into the night sky above Sentinel Rock. Dutton Cliff, Sun Notch, Applegate Peak, Eagle Crags and Garfield Peak rise up like the top of a crown from the South Rim of Crater Lake, as a warm glow from sodium vapor light pollution shines through Sun Notch on the rim. The wonders of night come together above Crater Lake, while the stars cover the night sky above like a shimmering blanket.

The movement by cities to replace old sodium vapor lighting with modern energy efficient LED lights has eliminated the warm light dome on the horizon in a lot of night skies, replacing it with a white light dome that extends higher up into the sky and is harder for astronomers to filter out. As time goes on, scenes like this utilizing a warm light pollution glow as a beautiful compositional element, will become increasingly rare as the cold white look of LED light pollution does not create the same warm color effect.

Fine art landscape stitched vertical panoramic photograph of the Milky Way and airglow over Crater Lake, Cloudcap Bay, and Sentinel Rock from Cloudcap Overlook in Crater Lake National Park. This image captures the stunning cosmic glow of the Milky Way with airglow above Oregon's only National Park, available as a luxury museum-grade limited edition print by James Mead.

Cloudcap Overlook and Crater Lake: The Brilliance of The Milky Way Above the Caldera

There's something magical about staring out into the collapsed caldera of a volcano and seeing nothing but deep water which always takes my breath away. Even in the dark of the night, you can see a hint of deep blue in the water. The brilliant, shimmering night skies above the lake always make for a wondrous sight above. The Perseid meteor shower peaks annually in mid-August, producing up to 100 meteors per hour at its peak, one of the most reliable and spectacular annual meteor showers visible from the Northern Hemisphere. Seeing the meteors combine with the Milky Way in the night sky is a sight to remember.

The power of nature is on full display here, as the 1,943 foot deep lake replaces the former 12,000 + foot high volcano Mount Mazama. Looking closely at the caldera walls, you can still see evidence of the explosion which led to the collapse of the volcano. The high peak of Mount Mazama collapsed and was replaced with a deep Caldera, filled now with a brilliant, shimmering cobalt blue water. 100% of the water in Crater Lake is snow melt, as the lake has no outlet. It's the clearest and cleanest large body of water in the world. No matter how many times I've been there, it's always breathtaking to look out and see the stunning lake. Perhaps my favorite thing about this place has always been how nature took one thing, the destruction of a volcano, and created something, new, beautiful and brilliant in its place. Nature's ability to create something beautiful out of almost any circumstance never ceases to amaze me. It's a lesson we can all learn from.
