Spirit Falls and the Little White Salmon River Flow Down a Basalt Canyon in the Spring in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington
The brilliant turquoise water of Spirit Falls gracefully flow over the basalt cliffs deep in a forested canyon and into the turquoise pool below as the Little White Salmon River flows down through the cliffs of the Columbia River Gorge towards the Columbia River.
Spirit Falls itself is a 33 foot tall plunge type waterfall with a 90 degree pitch and an average flow rate of 400 cubic feet per second (CFS). Located in Skamania County, Washington, the river through here is a 4.2 mile Class V+ run, and is runnable by experienced high level kayak when the flow range is between 200-800 CFS. The visual look of the falls varies by season and river flow, ranging from a single powerful plunge spanning the full width of the falls to multiple distinct drops side by side.
The waterfall and river here were protected in 1986 by an act of congress when they used the National Scenic Area Act to designate it part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, thereby protecting the area from development. Access to the area, however, was restricted in early 2023 by SDS Lumber Company since part of the steep unofficial trail down to the falls crosses land they have owned since November 2021.
This unofficial trail was only 0.8 miles round trip but was challenging and dangerous due to the steep 42.5% talus slope with an elevation drop of over 800 feet down to the canyon rim below. One slip and there wasn't much keeping you from falling all the way to the bottom. Final access to river level in the canyon as seen in this photo, Spirit of the Glen and Eye Candy often required bringing a rope all the way down to tie off at the rim of the canyon so you could safely lower yourself down to the river level in the canyon without slipping and falling (and to safely get back up and out of the canyon). The canyon walls down to river level were often wet, and it would have been easy to slip on the final descent to the river without a rope.
The turquoise water color here is spectacular. The internet often attributes the turquoise color of rivers like this to glacial flour, the fine rock powder ground by glaciers that gives Canadian Rockies lakes their famous color. But the Little White Salmon River has no glacier at its source, making that explanation scientifically impossible here. The true cause for the brilliant turquoise color is far more interesting: as rainwater and snowmelt percolate deep through limestone and basalt in the Monte Cristo Range of the Cascade Mountains within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, they dissolve microscopic calcium carbonate crystals which remain suspended in the water as it feeds the river's springs. When sunlight strikes the water, these calcite particles selectively scatter short blue and green wavelengths back to the surface while absorbing the longer red and yellow wavelengths. It's the same physics that makes the sky blue, except applied to water. The effect is amplified dramatically by the dark basalt canyon walls of the Columbia River Gorge, which absorb background light and make the turquoise water appear to radiate from within.
The unique geology and science of this area is what makes it truly unique. There's nothing quite like seeing the stunning turquoise water of the Little White Salmon River gracefully cascade over the basalt cliffs and down into the forested canyon below. I have lived 90 minutes from Spirit Falls my entire life, and have spent over 4 decades visiting the falls and the Gorge as a whole ever since I was a child. Whether from River level as seen here or up on the canyon rim as seen in Jolly Rancher, Spirit Falls was always a place which made time stand still. Each time I visited this place, I always imagined what it would be like to live in this magical forest glen. I'm grateful I was able to safely visit Spirit Falls for so many years before its access was restricted, and I'm truly thankful its beauty can still live on through the miracle of photography.

Historical Note - The Closure of Access to Spirit Falls
This photograph was captured in April 2021, prior to the November 17, 2021 sale of the land historically owned by the Broughton Lumber Company. SDS Lumber Co., the primary landowner at the time, was acquired by a consortium consisting of Wilkins, Kaiser & Olsen, Inc. (WKO) and Twin Creeks Timber LLC (a Green Diamond Resource Company venture). Following the transition, longstanding public access to Spirit Falls was officially terminated in January 2023 due to liability and land management concerns. This image represents a rare documentation of a landscape that is no longer accessible under current regulations.
