The turquoise of the Little White Salmon River gracefully cascade 33 feet over a basalt ledge at Spirit Falls. Deep within a narrow forested canyon in the Pacific Northwest's famed Columbia River Gorge, Spirit Falls drops over the edge of the cliff at a 90 degree pitch as it makes its way past Chaos rapid downstream from here towards the Columbia River.
During normal flow, a basalt hump of rock splits the river into two sections with Spirit Falls dropping 33 feet in a plunge style waterfall on both sides down into the turquoise pool of water below. During high flow, the volume of the river can overtake the basalt hump, creating one single drop spanning the width of the ledge. The average flow rate of the Little White Salmon River here is 400 cubic feet per second (CFS), and the river's 4.2 mile Class V+ run can be ran by high level kayakers when the flow range is between 200-800 CFS. One of the most challenging parts of the run is right where the river channels through a narrow v-shape in this photo. This is the edge of the Class V rapid aptly named Chaos. The area around Spirit Falls was protected in 1986 by congress when they utilized the National Scenic Area Act to designate the area part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in order to safeguard the area from development. The area is still protected from development, but due to SDS Lumber Company acquiring a section of land the unofficial trail runs through in November 2021, access is now restricted. SDS was later acquired by a consortium of companies owned by Green Diamond Resource Company, and in early 2023 Green Diamond restricted access across their land.
Surprisingly, the restriction which shut down access only affects an approximately 250 foot section of the trail near the canyon rim, as land use maps show this is the only section which crosses private land. Most of the trail crosses publicly owned land owned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery). This includes the steep section which crosses 42.5% talus slope with an elevation drop of over 800 feet from the beginning of the trailhead to the bottom (confirmed by my Gaia GPS track years before the closure of access to the waterfall).
The actual trail is short at only 0.8 miles round trip, but that steep section down the talus slope made it challenging when hauling a large Gitzo Mountaineer tripod with a 3-way pan and tilt plus a 40 lbs backpack of camera gear down with you. It's interesting that it's not this steep section of the trail which now blocks access to this natural treasure. It's the privately owned flatter section at the bottom above the river that blocks public access. It's a true moment of irony that access to the spot is game over thanks to Green Diamond Resource Company and their 250 feet of land.
The Turquoise Water at Spirit Falls and the Little White Salmon River. What Causes It?
Standing at the edge of Spirit Falls, there is a moment when the color of the water stops making sense. It is too vivid, too saturated, and too purely turquoise to feel real. The mind searches for an explanation and usually finds the same wrong one: glacial flour, the mineral dust suspended in melt water from glaciers that creates the turquoise lakes photographers travel to Banff and Patagonia to photograph. Reasonable assumption, but it’s the wrong river and the wrong area. The Little White Salmon has never had a glacier in its watershed.
The real explanation requires patience to understand, which is fitting because patience is exactly what created it. Over centuries, precipitation fell onto the Monte Cristo Range of the Cascade Mountains within Gifford Pinchot National Forest and began a slow journey downward through limestone and basalt, dissolving microscopic calcium carbonate crystals so gradually the process is impossible to observe directly. By the time this water emerges through springs into the 19 mile long Little White Salmon River, it carries an almost immeasurably fine suspension of calcite particles: invisible individually, transformative collectively. These particles interact with sunlight in a way that feels almost deliberate: absorbing the warmer red and yellow wavelengths while scattering the cooler blue and green wavelengths upward toward the surface. The dark basalt walls of the Columbia River Gorge remove every competing light source from the equation, and what remains is that unbelievable color: pure, concentrated, impossible-looking turquoise that the camera records faithfully and the eye can barely accept as real.
It's that almost unreal color that has stopped me in my tracks every time I had visited this spot over the decades. I've lived 90 minutes from Spirit Falls for my entire life of over 4 decades and counting. As a child, I grew up hiking with my Dad to these wondrous places in the Gorge. I often look back on these memories fondly now that he's gone. When it's quiet, I can still close my eyes and feel Dad standing there with me just as he always did. Access to this magical place has now been restricted, and I'm truly thankful the unimaginable beauty of Spirit Falls can still be seen through the wonders of photography. It may not be quite the same as visiting these hallowed grounds, but whenever I look upon my photos of this forest haven I take myself right back to this thin place which feels like it's so perfect it must be in the forests of dreams.

Historical Note - The End of Access to Spirit Falls
This photograph was captured in April 2021, prior to the November 17, 2021 sale of the land historically owned by the Broughton Lumber Company. SDS Lumber Co., the primary landowner at the time, was acquired by a consortium consisting of Wilkins, Kaiser & Olsen, Inc. (WKO) and Twin Creeks Timber LLC (a Green Diamond Resource Company venture). Following the transition, longstanding public access to Spirit Falls was officially terminated in January 2023 due to liability and land management concerns. This image represents a rare documentation of a landscape that is no longer accessible under current regulations.
