Great Basin Bristlecone Pines grow between the elevations of 9800 - 11000 feet, and are the oldest living organisms on earth. Located in the Inyo National Forest, the groves of Bristlecone Pines in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest of the White Mountains in California are home to trees which were alive hundreds of years before the great pyramids of Giza were built in Ancient Egypt. One of the oldest of these trees is Methuselah at 4857 years old and counting (since passed in age by the discovery of a tree in the area at over 5000 years old, though this one is officially kept off the record). The gnarled, twisted branches are a testament to the trees' ability to survive in this harsh, dry climate and a testament to the trees' unique resilience.
Schulman Grove and Methuselah Grove (both with an elevation of 10,000 feet) and Patriarch Grove (with an elevation of 11,000 feet) are the three most famous groves in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. There is something humbling about walking amongst these ancient trees, knowing they’ve witnessed countless sunrises and sunsets for millennia before our existence and will continue to for millennia after.
Seeing the early morning alpenglow kiss the slopes of the eastern Sierra Nevada far across Owens Valley at dawn and sunrise is a sight I’ll never forget, as is seeing the Belt of Venus blanket the skies above the Great Basin in Nevada from the slopes of the forest at sunset. It feels like time stands still here, and witnessing the soft pastel colors bathe the skies above these magnificent trees is something I’ll cherish forever.
Seeing the twisted, gnarled branches of these krummholz trees is always a treat, especially at night under the dark skies when the Milky Way rises overhead. I’ve been here many times over the years, and it is easily one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever been. The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest always leaves me with a feeling of peace and serenity. I feel very fortunate to have been able to witness all the breathtaking beauty this place has to offer. I hope that viewing the photos in my Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest Fine Art Landscape Photography Gallery brings the same peaceful feeling to everyone viewing it.
