Resembling a wizard's twisted, gnarled wooden wand, the Dead Sentry Tree (which is actually living, not dead) pairs with an Ancient Bristlecone Pine tree behind it as they rise towards the night sky on the steep 35-degree slopes of the White Mountains of California at Schulman Grove in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, while the Milky Way, the Dark Horse Nebula, the Great Rift, the Sagittarius star cloud and the stars shine brightly in the vast, dark skies overhead. With an elevation of over 10,000 feet, the Dead Sentry Tree, Schulman Grove, and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest's Bortle Class 2 skies are some of the darkest skies in California. The high elevation puts you above typical haze, allowing the dark skies to truly come to life in a manner that's harder at lower elevations.

Technical Note
Achieving a balance between ancient Great Basin bristlecone pine trees and the Milky Way in the night sky required precise LLL (Low Level Lighting). By utilizing a single-exposure workflow and carefully tuned Low Level Lighting, I’ve ensured the relationship between Great Basin bristlecone pine and the Milky Way remains authentic to the moment and properly balanced.

Captured using the single exposure workflow of the "Mead Method," developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience. This image preserves a genuine, single moment in time executed entirely in the field without the use of composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
