The Weathered Sage - Alpenglow and the Belt of Venus Sunrise in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest
Schulman Grove, Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, California
Alpenglow and the Belt of Venus at Dawn above the Dead Sentry Tree in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, Inyo National Forest, White Mountains, California
Dawn arrives in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest as alpenglow sunrise illuminates the Sierra Nevada Mountains across Owens Valley in the distance. The Belt of Venus begins to show as the first light of sunrise arrives above the Dead Sentry Tree and Schulman Grove. The Belt of Venus is the pink band just above the Sierra Nevada, and the blue band between it and the mountains is Earth's shadow, slowly fading away as sunrise takes hold. The ancient bristlecone pine twists upward like a gnarled wooden talon, cradling the first light of dawn as sunrise breaks over the White Mountains of California.
A Quiet Sunrise to Remember: The Belt of Venus in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest
This was a very serene experience. I've heard stories about how crowded it can get here, but I had the place all to myself (which honestly tends to happen quite a bit when I'm out). There wasn't another person around for miles and miles. As the pastel colors of the Belt of Venus rose over the Sierra Nevada Mountains at dawn, alpenglow kissed the snow covered slopes of the Sierras. The Belt a Venus has always been one of my favorite parts of twilight before sunrise and after sunset. You can see it when you look in the opposite direction of the Sun. It's that pink belt above the blue belt below. The pink belt is the first (or last in the evening) rays of sun, illuminating the sky through indirect light. The blue belt is the Earth's shadow, slowly fading away in the morning (or slowly creeping in in the evening).
It's always been one of my favorite parts of sunrise and sunset, so seeing it against Bristlecone Pines and the wondrous Sierra Nevada mountains was truly magnificent. Bristlecone Pines are an amazing tree, even one small green leaf and they are still alive. This tree, old and withered, still had one hidden green leaf on it. It's a testament to the Bristlecone Pines ability to survive in a harsh environment. It's amazing to see the Belt of Venus rise over the 14,000 foot Sierra Nevada Mountains while standing at 10,000 feet elevation in another 14,000 foot mountain range. It's even more amazing when you realize this tree has witnessed that, day in and day out, for over 4,000 years. The trunk and branches of this tree may be twisted and gnarled, but the sights this weathered sage has seen over the millennia are truly a thing of beauty. As I looked out across the White Mountains toward the Sierra Nevada, I was so very grateful I was able to share this experience with this beautiful weathered sage.
What is the Belt of Venus?
The Belt of Venus (also known as the antitwilight arch) is the pink glow in the sky which occurs around sunrise and sunset. It radiates out in both directions from a spot opposite the sun at a spot called the antisolar point, and is caused by sunlight from below the horizon scattering and reflecting back in the atmosphere. The blue section below the Belt of Venus is the Earth's shadow from night creeping in (or fading away at sunrise). The Belt of Venus isn't flat. It actually curves downward with the Earth's curve from the antisolar point in both directions until it disappears below the horizon, making it visible on both sides of the antisolar point.
