Sierra Watchman - Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest Belt of Venus Sunrise With Sierra Nevada Alpenglow
Schulman Grove, Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, White Mountains, California
Belt of Venus at Sunrise over the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest and Inyo National Forest as Alpenglow Lights the Sierra Nevada
An ancient Bristlecone Pine in Schulman Grove in the White Mountains of California stands watch over the Sierra Nevada Mountains far across Owens Valley as alpenglow at sunrise illuminates the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, Schulman Grove, the western slopes of the White Mountains and the eastern face of the Sierra Nevada Mountains across Owens Valley while the Belt of Venus greets daybreak in the skies above.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures the Belt of Venus at sunrise above the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest as alpenglow bathes the Sierra Nevada range across Owens Valley in glorious light. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest and the Sierra Nevada, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
The Timeless Magic of Alpenglow at Sunrise in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest
There's something magical about being in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. You're surrounded by trees seemingly older than time, the oldest of which are 4,858 years old and counting. The things these trees have seen must have been truly breathtaking. The conditions are harsh up here at over 10,000 feet in the White Mountains of California, which really puts into perspective how resilient and well suited for this environment these trees are. Surrounded by the oldest living things on Earth, sunrise is when the real magic happens.
Warm light bathes the trees in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest and the slopes of the White Mountains, while the Belt of Venus appears above the Sierra Nevada Mountains rising over 14,000 feet high across Owens Valley. Alpenglow begins to kiss the snow covered slopes of the high Sierra, as the magic of sunrise on the Sierra Nevada mixes with the wonders of the Bristlecone Pines which have been here for eons.
Standing tall like a Sierra Watchman, this Bristlecone pine grows on the steep slopes of the White Mountains, mixing green with its gnarled and twisted trunk and branches. The bark on the trees take on a beautiful tone, especially as the light of sunrise bathes them in glorious light. The mix of colors, trees and snow covered peaks seen here are some of the most serene sights I've ever witnessed.
I went up to Schulman Grove shortly after it opened for the year, so there wasn't a soul in sight, which I suppose isn't a surprise when your day started well before 5am when it was still dark. It was a truly tranquil experience: just me, the ancient Bristlecone pine trees and the Sierra Nevada across Owens Valley as I waited for dawn to appear.
It was a sunrise I'll never forget. It's peaceful up here at sunrise, especially when you're all alone. It feels as if you've been transported back thousands of years, witnessing the same beautiful these ancient trees have experienced day in and day out since the time the first of the Pyramids in ancient Egypt were being built. There's something incredible about it all. These ancient sentinels are as old as time itself, and experiencing their beauty as a new day as you look out from one 14,000 foot mountain range towards another is a truly humbling experience. These Bristlecone pines may have experiences this beauty day in and day out for thousands of years, but I'll be forever grateful that for one extraordinary morning they were able to share that beauty with me.
What is the Belt of Venus?
The Belt of Venus (also known as the antitwilight arch) is the pink glow in the sky which occurs around sunrise and sunset. It radiates out in both directions from a spot opposite the sun at a spot called the antisolar point, and is caused by sunlight from below the horizon scattering and reflecting back in the atmosphere. The blue section below the Belt of Venus is the Earth's shadow from night creeping in (or fading away at sunrise). The Belt of Venus isn't flat. It actually curves downward with the Earth's curve from the antisolar point in both directions until it disappears below the horizon, making it visible on both sides of the antisolar point.
