The Glacial White River Flows Down Mount Hood and through the White River Snowfield in the Winter at Night under Moonlight

The White River flows down from the White River Glacier on Mount Hood, creating a divide in the snow and ice covering the White River Snowfield as Moonlight illuminates the landscape. Moonlight paints the landscape with silver light, as Bonney Butte and Barlow Ridge rise up above White River Canyon and the large rocks and boulders blanketing the snowfield at the edge of the river.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures winter moonlight over the glacial White River as it flows down Mount Hood through the White River Snowfield. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

Winterland: The White River and White River Snowfield on Mount Hood under Moonlight

The White River washes the large rocks and boulders wash down from the foot of the White River Glacier on the upper slopes of Mount Hood during seasonal flooding, depositing them in White River Canyon. Glacial till consisting of large rocks, boulders, loose sand and loose soil cover the floor of White River Canyon. Combined with debris from the Old Maid Eruptions, this creates the soft landscape the White River cuts through. The water washes away the soft soil as it cuts its channel, leaving a bed of rocks and boulders next to the river as it cuts its way through the debris field.

The channel of the White River below here used to flow under the right most bridge span in the distance, but it shifted channel sometime between April 21, 2021 and June 7, 2021 during seasonal flooding and it now flows under the leftmost span of the bridge visible in the distance. The White River itself gets its name from the glacial till which sits suspended in its water, and it's a beautiful sight to see the glacial white water flowing through a field of deep, white snow.

The snow banks in the distance give a sense of just how deep the White River cuts its channel through here, and it’s a wondrous sight to witness the landscape covered in a blanket of snow as the water makes its way over the boulders and rocks which line the canyon floor under the snowfield. It's a gorgeous sight, especially with the Lodgepole pines and other conifer trees covering the edge of the snow covered canyon and the slopes above it. It's a wonderful contrast of colors, and there's nothing quite like seeing the White River flow through the snowfield across the beautiful winterland beneath a blanket of stars.

Technical Specifications

  • Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark III
  • Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
  • Settings : 41mm | f/5 | 13 Seconds | ISO 3200
  • Process: Manual 5-Frame Sigma Clipping and Median Stack for Noise Reduction | In-Camera Long Exposure (The Mead Method) | Bespoke Multi-Layer Noise Management (Manual Masking to preserve astronomical and foreground details)

Technical Note

Sigma Clipping averaging creates clean, low noise skies while removing statistical outliers such as airplanes. It preserves star data and accuracy in the sky, and it's one of the cleanest stacking methods for a starry night sky. Median stacking eliminates the random noise from the scene while preserving the details in the rocks, trees, and snow. Together using a custom foreground mask, they preserve the scene naturally as it was when the photo was taken while preserving museum-grade details throughout the scene.

Note on Provenance

This photo uses sigma clipping mean stacking to ensure clean shadows and details throughout the frame while ensuring the stars remain frozen. It is natural to the scene as it was taken. Exposures were taken back to back, one immediately after the other. Captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of nightscape experience. No trackers, no sky-swaps, and no generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
