Mountain Music - Mount Hood Alpenglow during Nautical Twilight above the White River in the Winter
White River, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Winter Alpenglow on Mount Hood and the White River during Nautical Twilight in the White River Snowfield
Long after sunset, dusk passes on a cold winter evening as the last bit of alpenglow light lingers in the clouds above Mount Hood, painting them with subtle pastel tones as the glacial White River cuts through the snow and ice of the White River Snowfield below. Alpenglow hangs on into nautical twilight, as the last remaining magenta color softly illuminates the slopes of Mount Hood and the clouds in the sky above as the colors reflect off the water of the White River as it cuts through White River Canyon.
Lodgepole Pine and other shallow rooted conifer trees in White River Canyon above the river at the foot of the slopes take on a golden glow from winter chlorosis, which causes them to lose their dark green color as yellow hues dominate the needles due to cold winter temperatures slowing down chlorophyll production. It's a similar color to Western Larch trees in autumn, but the cause is entirely different. The soil here is more compacted, dense and laden with rocks. Behind them and further up on the slopes, the fir and hemlock trees retain their deep green color as their roots go deeper into the soil, helping them retain their dark green color as snow blankets the tops of the trees.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures winter alpenglow on Mount Hood as it reflects off the waters of the White River as it cuts through the White River Snowfield. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
The Magic of Winter Alpenglow on Mount Hood That Lingers into Nautical Twilight
On rare occasions in the winter, alpenglow can linger past dusk and into nautical twilight. The vibrant magenta hues from earlier in the night begin to fade, but that last bit of color can linger in the clouds and on the snow covered slopes and it valiantly fights against the dying of the light. It's actually quite the sight here, as the lights from Mount Hood Meadows on the other side of the snow covered forested ridge can reflect off low lying clouds, creating a stunning color palette of light long after sunset.
There are golden conifer trees here, which take on a golden color in the winter which shifts to a light green color in early spring. It's caused by winter chlorosis which causes the needles to lose their green color and take on a golden color as the dark green chlorophyll fades away. Lodgepole pine trees and other evergreen conifers take on this color when their nutrient content gets lower in the winter. It's a fascinating sight to see, one that's reminiscent of Larch trees in the autumn if they retained their needles deep into the heart of winter. It's especially magnificent to see this against the dark green color of the snow covered fir and hemlock trees which dominate the slopes above the White River Canyon.
Winter is always magical here, and seeing the mixing of color palettes on the trees below and in the skies above it's a magnificent sight, especially when the snow covered slopes of Mount Hood glow under the fading light while the White River reflects the last bit of color hanging on above. It's a beautiful sight, and it always feels like Mount Hood is playing wonderful mountain music to give us one final, grand sight before the last light of day fades into the dark of night. I've spent a lot of time up here over the decades, and the wonders of winter here are a sight which never gets old.
