Mighty Hood - Alpenglow on Mount Hood Rising above the Mount Hood National Forest at Sunset
Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Alpenglow on Mount Hood at Sunset as It Rises above the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon
Alpenglow lights the snow covered slopes of Mount Hood and into the heavens above just after sunset, as it rises above the evergreen trees in the Mount Hood National Forest below. The Palmer chairlift and ski run can be seen on the upper slopes of Mount Hood above Timberline on the Palmer Snowfield (formerly Palmer Glacier, but glacial movement stopped in the 1980s). The Zigzag Glacier, the White River Glacier and the Palmer Snowfield illuminate with glorious alpenglow light, creating a beautiful contrast as the warm light shines on the snowy slopes of Mount Hood while cooler green hues dominate the pine, fir, and hemlock trees of the forest below.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures alpenglow just after sunset on Mount Hood as it rises above Timberline and the Mount Hood National Forest below. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
The Magic of Alpenglow on Mount Hood above Timberline on the Palmer Snowfield
There's something about Mount Hood rising above the surrounding landscape which always captivates my soul, especially when snow drapes a winter cloak over its slopes as alpenglow bathes the mountain in glorious magenta and orange light. The sky took on a slight purple hue this evening, a beautiful contrast against the warm colors covering the mountain in a veil of heavenly light.
I've always loved this view, it captures Mount Hood rising above the timberline as the Palmer chairlift goes up the slopes of the Palmer Glacier (now technically the Palmer Snowfield since all glacial movement stopped in the 1980s). The Palmer chairlift is North America's highest spring and summer chairlift, sitting at an elevation of 8,540 feet at the top of the lift. It's actually closed in the winter due to exposure and high winds, and its opening signifies the changing of the seasons.
The Palmer chairlift ends near the top of the Palmer snowfield, just below the upper portions of Zigzag Glacier and White River Glacier. There's a gorgeous view of Illumination Rock and Crater Rock from this angle, as the snow covered southern slopes of Mount Hood rise up high above the Timberline to an elevation of 11,249 feet. Coalman Glacier is visible high above the White River Glacier, tucked next to Crater Rock. Coalman Glacier is the highest elevation glacier on Mount Hood, spanning elevations of 10,500 feet up to 11,200 feet (just below the summit). It's part of the popular south face climbing route, and it sits surrounded by Crater Rock to the west, Steel Cliff to the southeast, Hawkins Ridge (also known as Hawkins Cliffs) to the northwest, and the actual summit of Mount Hood to the north.
Witnessing the glaciers and slopes of Mount Hood blanketed in an ethereal winter coat of snow as alpenglow bathes the mountain in vibrant alpenglow is pure bliss. There's nothing quite like seeing Mount Hood rise above a sea of green fir, pine, and hemlock trees below as the mountain stands tall under a blazing coat of orange and magenta alpenglow. It's sunset at its finest, and for those brief few moments time always seems to stand still as I look up at the wonders of mighty Hood unfolding before me.
