Winter Symphony- Multnomah Falls Ice and Snow during a Winter Sunset in the Columbia River Gorge
Multnomah Falls, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
Multnomah Falls Ice and Snow at Sunset during a Winter Deep Freeze in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon
A December deep freeze plunges temperatures down to as low as 10° Fahrenheit (-12° Celsius) for several weeks, causing the area around Multnomah Falls to freeze over as ice clings to the basalt walls surrounding the waterfall. Ice partially covers the plunge pool along Multnomah Creek and the base of the waterfall at sunset, as icicles form all around the basalt amphitheater surrounding Multnomah Falls.
Magenta and purple colors bathe the clouds over Multnomah Falls in sunset light, as Oregon's highest waterfall gracefully cascades 620 feet over two tiers as the Benson Bridge straddles the waters of Benson Pool at the edge of the Lower Multnomah Falls tier. A large log that normally lies in the pool at the base of the falls is trapped in ice, as snow covers the log while icicles cling to its edges. A beautiful mix of green moss and yellow lichens growing on the basalt cliffs combines with cold ice and snow to create an ethereal winter wonderland at one of Oregon's most beautiful locations.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Multnomah Falls in the winter at sunset surrounded by snow and ice. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of the Columbia River Gorge, and is available as a luxury museum-grade limited edition print by James Mead.
The Wonders of Winter: Snow, Ice and Multnomah Falls in the Winter at Sunset
I've been visiting Multnomah Falls and the Columbia River Gorge since I was a young child, when I would visit this fantastic place with my Mom and Dad as we'd go on family hikes. Like most waterfalls in the waterfall corridor of the Gorge, Multnomah Falls flows year round. After more than 4 decades spent visiting this magical place, winter and fall colors remain my two favorite seasons at this iconic location. Even after 40 plus years, the sight of Multnomah Falls in full flow during these seasons still takes my breath away. There's something magical about seeing the Gorge transform into a frozen winter wonderland. During these rare moments, time always seems to stand still as you stand below the waterfall taking in the serenity of the Gorge.
This was one of the first fine art photos, if not the first photo of Multnomah Falls which captures its full, true amphitheater in all its glory as most photos focus only on the waterfall and not the entire basalt amphitheater it flows into. Even over 15 years later, it still remains one of the few pieces of Fine Art Landscape Photography at this location that captures Multnomah Falls and the full amphitheater in all its glory.
Winter can be spectacular here at Multnomah Falls, especially when the area is plunged into a deep freeze as happened here. The weather was around 14 degrees Fahrenheit for two weeks, so the little bit of snow that fell hung around, mixing with the cold ice forming near the waterfall and in the plunge pool to produce a wondrous scene where the wonders of winter came together with the beauty of Multnomah Falls in perfect harmony.
It was a winter symphony of flowing water, frozen water and green forest set against the basalt cliffs of the Columbia River Gorge as sunset lit the clouds in the sky overhead with magical, pastel purple hues. I've spent a lot of time here over the decades, but witnessing the full basalt amphitheater of Multnomah Falls transformed into a winter wonderland at sunset as the waterfall tumbled over the basalt cliffs will always be one of my favorite sights here. Time seemed to stand still, and for a brief moment it felt like I was transported into the forest of heaven where the wondrous waterfalls spring to life in all their glory. I've always felt the Columbia River Gorge was a thin place which blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth, but experiencing it in the middle of winter under that magical sunset light is something I'll never forget.

Technical Note - Preserving Museum Grade Details in a Panoramic Photo with an APS-C Sensor
Captured as a panoramic photo using manually bracketed exposure sequences and created via a true 32-bit floating-point RAW workflow in ProPhoto RGB color space, this work reflects the dedication to data integrity championed by the "Mead Method." Developed over 15 years of professional fine art experience, this approach maintains an uncompressed, continuous color spectrum preserving the full linear light data of the original scene with virtually infinite tonal precision, capturing genuine structural detail entirely from the original field conditions. This advanced approach successfully overcomes the higher noise floor inherent in APS-C sensors, ensuring that fine details and subtle color gradations are preserved with museum-grade clarity.
Note on Provenance - Winter Ice at Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge
Converted to 16-bit Adobe RGB for the master print file and sRGB for the web, this work was captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of professional fine art experience. This photograph stands as a true, authentic moment in time executed completely without the use of digital composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. A single, historic moment completely preserved.
