Framed by Autumn - Multnomah Falls and Benson Bridge with Bigleaf Maple Peak Fall Colors in Oregon

Multnomah Falls, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

Multnomah Falls Framed by Bigleaf Maples ablaze with Peak Fall Colors in the Autumn in Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

Yellow and gold Bigleaf Maple trees adorned with golden peak fall colors frame Multnomah Falls as it falls 620 feet across two distinct tiers over the cliffs of the Columbia River Gorge. The Bigleaf Maple trees thrive on the basalt cliffs of the gorge, with their abundance across Oregon's river valleys and forests earning them the nickname Oregon Maple. Their 12 inch across leaves are the largest of any variety of Maple tree.

The waterfall itself formed around 15,00 years ago during the Glacial Lake Missoula floods, and is fed by an underground spring high up on Larch Mountain which flow down towards the Columbia River along Multnomah Creek. It's Oregon's tallest waterfall and like all of the Columbia River Gorge waterfalls along the waterfall corridor it maintains year-round flow, though it's flow is significantly higher during the wet autumn, winter and spring months. It flows over six flows of Grande Ronde basalt which forms the cliffs here in the Gorge. It is the tallest, and arguably the most famous, waterfall in the State of Oregon and one of the premier destinations along the waterfall corridor in the Columbia River Gorge.

Multnomah Falls has been written about dating as far back as October 30, 1805 when Merriweather Lewis wrote about it when he and William Clark passed Multnomah Falls during their expedition leading the Corps of Discovery. They would see it again in April 1806 on their return trip while leaving Oregon. I have been visiting this waterfall my entire live for over 4 decades. I used to hike the waterfall trail with my Dad as a kid growing up, and continued to do so when I met my now wide well over 2 decades ago. Like any native Oregonian, this place and the Gorge in general hold a special place in my heart.

Fall Grandeur at Multnomah Falls: Autumn Beauty in the Columbia River Gorge

When the Bigleaf Maple trees at Multnomah Falls turn a beautiful shade of gold, they perfectly frame Multnomah Falls and the Benson Bridge, surrounding them with the colors of autumn as the water of Multnomah Creek gracefully tumble 620 feet over the cliffs. It's vintage beauty of the gorge, framed by the colors of fall which briefly transform this place into something truly magical.

The Columbia River Gorge has long been one of my favorite places, and I've been coming here most of my life. It truly comes alive once the weather turns cold, the colors come out and the rains of the wet season bring the waterfalls to life. There's a cold, crisp air in the gorge this time of year that mixes with the mist from the waterfall. When a slight gorge wind rustles the leaves it's a moment of bliss, a perfect mix of the 5 senses. It's a perfect harmony of nature.

This place can often be crowded, but it was fairly empty this evening as the day drew to a close and the light slowly began to fade. It's always a wondrous moment when you're able to experience a place like this without too many people around. It allows you to truly stop and take in the grandeur of the scene. I've been here more times than I can count across four decades, but those brief few moments of color in the autumn are truly magical. Those are the moments that stand frozen in time.
