Civil Twilight draws to a close as dusk sets in over Bonneville Dam and the Columbia River in the Columbia River Gorge in Multnomah County, Oregon and Skamania County, Washington. Ruckel Ridge and Benson Plateau rise up behind the second powerhouse of Bonneville Dam.
The view here looking across the Columbia and Bonneville Dam is fascinating. The steep pyramid shaped peak in the middle is Ruckel Ridge, which rises up 1,847 feet looking like a mountain when viewed from this angle, and I've always referred to it as Ruckel Point since the ridge takes a pretty sharp decline from there, as you can see in the photo. Ruckel Ridge actually continues uphill, paralleling Ruckel Creek and the Ruckel Creek Trail #405 as it curves upward towards Benson Plateau at around 3,700 feet. Benson Plateau continues to rise an additional 300 feet to a little over 4,000 feet before dropping in elevation out of frame on the backside.
But Benson Plateau isn't massive peak dominating the left half of the frame. It's the high point behind the massive unnamed peak which connects to Ruckel Ridge. The massive peak is a 3,227 foot summit that has no name, so I've always called it Rudolph Point since it rises up between the Ruckel Creek drainage and the Rudolph Creek drainage.
The second snow-covered ridge rising up behind Ruckel Ridge is an unnamed ridge that rises up between Fern Creek and Four Mile Creek. A third, smaller ridge is hard to spot in the twilight, but rises up in front of it about 400 feet lower in elevation between Tish Creek and Fern Creek. The v-shaped area to the ridge of Ruckel Point and Ruckel Ridge is actually Eagle Creek, and the famous Eagle Creek Trail runs through a narrow basalt canyon here colloquially named Eagle Creek Canyon. The steep slopes on the right are Wauna Point.
The Magic of Twilight at Bonneville Dam
Twilight has become my favorite view here now, as the shrouded mystery of dusk hides the massive burn scars left by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire. During daylight, Ruckel Point, Ruckel Ridge, the unnamed peak and the slopes of Wauna Point all have massive burn scars of blackened trees mixed with green. To the west of Wauna Point, the fire torched the Tanner Creek drainage even worse. Having photographed and documented that fire from multiple vantage points near here, I can honestly say it was the hardest task of my career.
But during the magic of twilight, all of that heartbreak fades away. It reminds me of the view I knew here most of my life. The forested basalt cliffs appear to rise up above the Columbia River just as they always have, cloaked in dense green forest above the glow of the dam at night.
I've always been captivated by dams in the American West ever since I was a child. It runs in my DNA. I'm the great-great-grandson of Dr Elwood Mead, the namesake of Lake Mead who as the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, oversaw the design, planning and construction of Grand Coulee Dam, Owyhee Dam, and Hoover Dam (originally named Boulder Dam). Living about an hour from Bonneville Dam, it has always been a place I have loved to visit. As the great-great-grandson of Dr. Elwood Mead I've always been drawn to Columbia River dams, including John Day Dam further upriver.
The second powerhouse has always fascinated me. Built by widening the Columbia River on the Washington side to create Cascade Island between the second powerhouse and the original spillway along the river's original channel, it was added long after the first powerhouse. The first powerhouse started construction in 1934, opening in 1937 at a cost of $88.4 million. The second powerhouse started construction in 1974, opening in 1981 at a cost of $654 million. The dam and the entire area was designated the Bonneville Dam Historic District in 1987, cementing this new deal era project as an integral part of the history of the American West.
My favorite time to view dams has always been at night, when the glow from the dams reflects off the river waters. Here, the lights of Bonneville Dam's second powerhouse dance across the mighty Columbia River as the basalt cliffs of the Gorge in Oregon tower overhead. It's a beautiful harmony of architecture, infrastructure and natural beauty. Witnessing the Columbia River mirror the golden glow of the dam as twilight sets in is truly magic.
