Heavenly Falls Shows Through Japanese Maples Adorned with Fall Color Next to a Yukimi Dōrō Stone Lantern in the Lower Strolling Pond in the Portland Japanese Garden
Water gracefully tumbles over the rocks and down the cliffs as Heavenly Falls flows down into the Lower Pond in the Portland Japanese Garden just beyond the famous Zig-Zag Bridge in the Strolling Pond Garden. The surrounding Japanese Maples turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange and red during peak fall color as a Yukimi Dōrō stone lantern stands on a rock bed covered with bits of soft moss, where it reflects in the calm waters of Lower Pond as an an 'Osakazuki' Upright Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki') grows above it.
Heavenly Falls shows through the canopy of an 'Osakazuki' Upright Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki') adorned with yellow and orange peak fall color, as a Yukimi Dōrō stone lantern sits under it, reflecting in the water of Lower Pond. A cone shaped rock rises up out of Lower pond nearby, as yellow Yoshino Cherry tree (Prunus × yedoensis) leaves float while a fall colors reflect in the water.
Heavenly Falls was designed by Professor Takuma Tono of Tokyo Agricultural University to resemble a river of stars (the Milky Way), descending gracefully over the rocks and down into Lower Pond below. A Yukimi Dōrō (snow viewing lantern) stands under an 'Osakazuki' Laceleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki') adorned in full fall foliage at the shore of the Lower Pond next to Heavenly Falls in the Lower Strolling Pond Garden. A lone, Weeping Laceleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum aff 'Garnet') grows on the shore along the Strolling Pond on the other side of Heavenly Falls at the Portland Japanese Garden in Oregon, adorned with the glorious red, copper and orange peak fall color Weeping Laceleaf Japanese Maples are known for during the peak of autumn. It's leaves cascade down from the tree, mirror the natural cascade of the waterfall itself. It all blends together in very serene and peaceful setting, with the beautiful mix of flowing water, still ponds, stone lanterns (ishi-dōrō) and fall colors all coming together in a perfect moment of tranquility.
