Flow of Autumn - Portland Japanese Garden Lower Pond, Heavenly Falls and Japanese Maple Fall Color

Heavenly Falls, Strolling Pond Garden, Portland Japanese Garden, Oregon

Heavenly Falls, Laceleaf Japanese Maples at Peak Fall Color and a Yukimi Dōrō stone lantern Reflect in Lower Pond in the Strolling Pond Garden at the Portland Japanese Garden

The water of Heavenly Falls tumbles down gracefully the cliffs and rocks and into Lower Pond in the Strolling Pond Garden as the surrounding Weeping Laceleaf Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum var. dissectum aff. 'Garnet') and 'Osakazuki' Upright Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki') turn brilliant shades of yellow, gold, red and orange during peak fall color as yellow autumn Yoshino Cherry tree (Prunus × yedoensis) leaves float by on top of the Lower Pond water.

To the left of Heavenly Falls, a lone Weeping Laceleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum aff. 'Garnet') ignites with red and orange peak fall color as it reflects in Lower Pond, its downward follow weeping shape mirroring the natural flow of the water cascading down the waterfall. To the right of the waterfall, a Yukimi Dōrō stone lantern (snow viewing lantern) sits on a rock platform as bits of green moss growing on it as it reflects in Lower Pond. An 'Osakazuki' Laceleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki') adorned with yellow and gold peak fall colors grows above the stone lantern, as yellow leaves from the trees float in the calm, tranquil waters of Lower Pond as they swirl next to a large moss covered stone rising from the waters of the pond.

Professor Takuma Tono of Tokyo Agricultural University, the original designer of the Portland Japanese Garden in the 1960s, designed Heavenly Falls and the Strolling Pond Garden. He designed Heavenly Falls to resemble a river of stars (the Milky Way), descending gracefully over the rocks and down into Lower Pond below. All the elements in the scene here blend together in a calm, peaceful manner. It's a testament to the enduring power of Professor Takuma Tono's design and ingenuity, and to the tranquil feeling this unique place always provides when the flow of autumn engulfs the landscape in the wondrous colors of fall.
