A Weeping Laceleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum aff. 'Garnet') turns brilliant shades of orange and red as peak fall color sets in at the Tea Garden in the Portland Japanese Garden. Witnessing peak fall color on this Garnet Laceleaf Japanese Maple as its branches and trunk twist and turn like a twister is a thing of beauty. An 'Osakazuki' Upright Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki') shows its vibrant yellow-gold autumn colored leaves through the canopy of the Weeping Laceleaf Japanese Maple, as its yellow-gold leaves begin to fall and cover the landscape below it. Fiery red-orange leaves blanket the soft green bed of moss below the Weeping Laceleaf tree, as the pale blue cloudy Portland morning skies show through between the leaves. It's a stunning mix of warm and cool colors coming together in a hidden corner of the garden.
This is an underrated Weeping Laceleaf Japanese Maple in the Portland Japanese Garden, which I've always called the "Twister Tree" since it has no official name. The Upright Japanese Maple behind it usually has different timing fall color wise, allowing you to see a beautiful mix of colors stacked against each other in one photo. The way the leaves on the "Twister Tree" tree peak with deep crimson, brilliant orange and distinct amber-gold undertones against the striking yellow of the Upright Japanese Maple leaves shining through is a thing of beauty. Like the Weeping Japanese Maples I nicknamed the "Wings of a Phoenix Tree" and the "Ruby Flame Tree," this Japanese Maple can hold its own when compared to the famous "National Geographic Tree" when it comes to peak fall color and autumn beauty. Each of these trees resides in a different part of the Portland Japanese Garden, and talking the time to stroll through the garden and view each of them in their own unique garden location is always something that brings about a sense of peace and tranquility.
