Ruby Red Weeping Laceleaf Japanese Maple at Peak Fall Color in the Autumn at the Portland Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon

A Weeping Laceleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum aff. 'Garnet') turns a brilliant red with hints of orange during peak fall color at the famed Portland Japanese Garden of Washington Park in Portland, Oregon. The trunk of this Laceleaf Japanese Maple twists as it grows up and sideways from its base, forming captivating patterns as it grows up from a soft bed of green moss near where the Flat Garden, Historic Gardens and the Sand and Stone Garden all come together in a nexus just below the Strolling Pond Garden..

During peak fall color, the way the branches of this Japanese Maple twist and turn above the sideways angled trunk resemble a ruby flame twisting and turning in the wind. When the fall color foliage arrives in mid-autumn, the canopy of this tree comes to life in a blaze of ruby red color rising above the brown tree trunk and the soft, green bed of moss below. It may not be as famous as its world famous brethren known as the "Tree of Life" and "The National Geographic Tree" which grows in the Strolling Pond Garden nearby, but it's equally as beautiful, equally as stunning and it brings forth the same feeling of peace, serenity and wonder in a less crowded setting. It has a unique, graceful, umbrella-like shape and canopy which comes to life every fall during peak fall color when the deeply lobed lace-leaves spring forth with ruby red color. I've always nicknamed it the "Ruby Flame Laceleaf Japanese Maple," or "Ruby Flame tree" for short due to the unique, ruby red color which adorn its leaves every autumn.

Beyond the Tree of Life: The Portland Japanese Garden's Other Stunning Laceleaf Japanese Maple

The red colors Laceleaf Japanese Maples turn during peak color in the fall are always a stunning sight. It's like a soft ruby flame raising up from the ground, greeting you in the most peaceful and serene of ways. Although there is one main tree known as "The Tree" made famous by Peter Lik in the Portland Japanese Garden, the entire garden is filled with beauty, including many more wonderful Japanese Maple trees and other plants with gorgeous foliage.

I've always called this specific Japanese Maple the "Ruby Flame" tree. The way this particular Japanese Maple tree twists and turns, then going out to one side really caught my eye the first time I laid eyes on it ages ago. It was a magnificent sight to see the red crown of the tree rising up from a soft bed of grass and moss. It's easy to see why many people find a stroll through Japanese Gardens such a peaceful and relaxing experience. The sight of red leaves on the Japanese Maples in the autumn it is something that will never get old. The wonderful peak colors in the autumn add to that serene feeling, and create a beautiful moment you can get lost in forever. There may be one, famous "Tree of Life" Japanese Maple here in the world famous Portland Japanese Garden, but us locals know this stunning, lesser known Japanese Maple can hold its own when it comes to the magical beauty and wonder nature provides in this stunning Japanese Garden.
