The Magician's Cauldron - Aurora Borealis and the Milky Way Spiral Arm over Crater Lake, Oregon
Rim Village, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
Aurora Borealis Glow, the Milky Way Spiral Arm and the Andromeda Galaxy over Crater Lake, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
The magentas and greens of the Aurora Borealis illuminate the night sky above Wizard Island, Llao Rock, Cloudcap and Mount Scott as the aurora colors reflect off the still waters of Crater Lake. The Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way northern spiral arm rise high into the skies above the diffuse aurora stretching across the sky, creating a rainbow of color in the night during the legendary June 2015 G4 geomagnetic storm.

The Aurora Borealis, Milky Way Spiral Arm and the Magic of Crater Lake at Night
There always seems to be magic in the night skies at Crater Lake, especially when the Aurora Borealis makes an appearance. Whether it's a vibrant Aurora solar storm with pillars or one more centered around the glowing colors of the Aurora as seen here, it's always a magical sight. This night, the Milky Way northern spiral arm and the Andromeda Galaxy made an appearance along with the Aurora, creating a beautiful mix of night sky wonders above the magician's cauldron of color that is Crater Lake.
The waters of Crater Lake are the cleanest, clearest large body of water on Earth according to the National Park Service (NPS) and as a result they often reflect the colors in the sky above. At night when the Aurora makes an appearance, the result is a stunning palette of colors in one of nature's holiest thin places. Crater Lake is unique: it's a mountain cathedral devoid of a mountain peak. Instead, the mountain is filled with some of the most pristine waters in the world reaching a depth of 1,943 feet deep according to the NPS. Water clarity at Crater Lake typically reaches 120 feet, with a record reading of 142 feet recorded in 1997 using a Secchi disk, among the highest ever measured in any lake in the world. Mount Mazama erupted catastrophically 7,700 years ago, emptying its magma chamber in a circular fashion around what's now the rim. Scars of this are still visible on the walls below the rim.
Mount Mazama took 500,000 years to build and its complete collapse happened in a mere 2 to 3 hours. In its place was a caldera that is estimated to have been nearly 4,000 feet deep, which according to the National Park Service only took 460 years to fill (a blip on the geologic time scale). That's the magic that is Crater Lake: it's a magic cauldron of wonder which took an act of destruction and transformed it into one of nature's most beautiful cathedrals. I've always felt at peace up here amongst the deep blue water of this thin place, and seeing it light up with the colors of the Aurora Borealis as the Milky Way spiral arm and the Andromeda Galaxy rise overhead is a sight I'll never forget.

Crater Lake's Depth: Is it 1,943 feet deep or 1,949 feet deep?
Crater Lake's depth shows as two numbers, 1,943 feet deep and 1,949 feet deep and both measurements are technically correct. Both measurements stem from a comprehensive multibeam sonar survey conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the National Park Service (NPS), and Oregon State University in July 2000. The discrepancy between the two figures comes down to how the water surface is referenced. 1,943 feet (592 meters) is the official standardized depth used on most National Park Service FAQ pages. This is the maximum depth adjusted to the lake's historical average surface elevation of 6,173 feet above sea level. 1,949 feet (594 meters) was the absolute maximum depth recorded during the actual sonar scan in 2000. At that specific time, the lake's water level was higher than its long-term average. This is the reason why depending on the article you read, you'll often see both numbers cited by the NPS and the USGS.
