The Milky Way rises high into the night sky above Grotto Cove and Crater Lake at night as faint airglow illuminates the skies above. The Milky Way core rises up from Sun Notch, Applegate Peak, and Garfield Peak as Watchman Peak, Hillman Peak and Llao Rock rise up on the rim across the caldera. Wizard Island sits in the shadow of the Caldera, as green airglow illuminates the night sky, reflecting on the water below as the wonders of night come alive above Crater Lake.

The Beauty of Night: Grotto Cove and Crater Lake Under the Milky Way
There's something about Crater Lake which always captivates me. It's absolutely amazing to stand at the caldera rim and look out at the caldera filled 1,943 feet deep with nothing but rain and snowmelt. Add in the truly dark Bortle Class 1 skies up here at night and it's truly a wonderful sight. The lake stretches 6 miles across, and it feels every bit as vast as it looks. Add in the thousands upon thousands of stars in the dark night skies above with the Milky Way rising high above and it's a feeling of standing smack dab in the middle of eternity.
It's a reminder of the power of nature, as well as its ability to recover. 7700 years ago, Mount Mazama collapsed during an eruption. This beautiful lake we now see is the result of nature's ability to recover. It's a reminder of how one kind of beauty in nature can transform into something completely different yet equally as beautiful. It's a perfect compliment to the wonderful views of the night sky, the light of which actually happened a long time ago and is just now reaching us. It's a wonderful mix of the past and the present. Scenes like this always seem to leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed, and the wonderful mix of past and present here is a wonderful reminder of why we must preserve the beauty of nature so that future generations may also experience it's wonders.
