Fed by glaciers on the slopes of Mount Hood in Oregon, the White River flows down from the mountain, cutting a new channel for the river after winter flooding.

Slalom - Storm Clouds over the Glacial White River and the Mount Hood National Forest

White River, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Storm Clouds in the Late Spring over the White River in the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon

The glacial wild and scenic White River flows down through the lower slopes of Mount Hood and the Mount Hood National Forest as Bonney Butte and the lower slopes of Barlow Ridge rise up in the background. The White River originates at the foot of the White River Glacier on the southeastern slopes of Mount Hood, getting its name from the chalky, milky white color the water takes on due to the glacial flour which washes down from the rocks ground down under the glacier.

The river weaves its way through the landscape like a skier on a slalom course, cutting a new channel after flooding during spring 2021 changed the river's channel, forcing it further east into White River Canyon as the former flood plain it flowed through now lies abandoned. Younger fir and pine trees surround the river in this part of the Mount Hood National Forest, as older sections of the forest cover the slopes of Bonney Butte and Barlow Ridge in the distance.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures the glacial White River flowing down Mount Hood after flooding caused it to cut a new channel through the Mount Hood National Forest as storm clouds blanket the skies above. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

The Joy of Discovering a New Path for the White River Down Mount Hood

This was a fun one to photograph. 5 Days earlier while heading up to Mount Hood to photograph River in the Heavens, I'd noticed the channel of the White River had shifted over the course of just 51 days. I'd photographed Dreamcicle on April 21, 2021 at 2:56 A.M. 51 days later on June 7, 2021, I returned to a place I've spent most of my life visiting to photograph what would become my photo River in the Heavens, except there was a problem. The old floodplain past the Highway 35 Bridge was completely dry and bare. Thankfully, I'd arrived early so I could enjoy the night skies. Some hiking, exploring and planning in the dark and a bit later I had a new composition planned around the river's new channel.

I returned five days later to explore the new channel in the daylight and plan out a composition. The weather was cloudy, and I felt the dark clouds in the skies above would be the perfect complement against the chalky, milky white waters of the White River as it cut through the soft silt, ash, dirt and rock of its new path down the lower slopes of Mount Hood.

The view was actually more beautiful than the old path was. No longer did the White River cut through a barren floodplain. Instead, it weaved its way through the landscape and the Mount Hood National Forest like a path through a slalom course. The soil had a red hue to it, mixed in with the standard brown color and the colors of various rocks lining the riverbanks. Green trees and shrubs lined the shore, creating a perfect contrast as the White River weaved its way through the soft soil while cutting a new channel approximately 20 feet below.

It was fascinating to witness a place I've visited so many times abandoned its old channel and cut a new one in such short order. I've been visiting Mount Hood for my entire life, but it's not often you get to see such a geologic shift that quickly. The shift in the river's channel occurred approximately one mile upstream from the Highway 35 Bridge after spring flooding blocked the river's old channel through the boulder field in White River Canyon, forcing it to find a new path. The river has slowly been moving eastward over the decades, but this was a pretty abrupt shift in the channel through the lower parts of the boulder field and the floodplain.

It was a memorable experience, as there's nothing quite like witnessing a brand new sight in a place I've been visiting my entire life. The landscape around this new channel was beautiful, with a wonderful color palette of soil and trees complimenting the river as it made its way downstream. Winter or summer, spring or fall I've always enjoyed visiting the White River through here, but I'll never forget the excitement of seeing the river flow down through its brand new channel for the first time.
