Zig-Zag - Glacial White River on Mount Hood under Storm Clouds in the Mount Hood National Forest
White River, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Storm Clouds in the Late Spring over the White River as it Flows through White River Canyon in the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon
The Glacial White River zigs and zags its way down the lower slopes of Mount Hood through the east side of White River Canyon as dark moody storm clouds line the skies above. Flooding in the spring 2021 between April 21, 2021 and June 7, 2021 caused the White River to abandon its old channel through here and carve a new channel on the east side of White River Canyon. The original channel lies in the flood plain on the other side of the trees behind the river.
Dark, moody storm clouds line the skies above as the White River through the gray, brown and red rocks mixed in with silt, dirt, and ash that make up the floor on this side of White River Canyon. The summit of Mount Hood is no longer visible from this section of the river looking upstream, as the angle of the White River's new path shifted the river's angle enough that Mount Hood sits a little northeast when looking straight on at this section of the river. It's a beautiful, moody new take on an old classic.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures the glacial White River flowing down Mount Hood after flooding caused it to cut a new channel through White River Canyon as storm clouds blanket the skies above. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
The Beauty, Power and Raw Fury of Mount Hood and the White River
The first thing I noticed when I saw the White River's new path down the lower slopes of Mount Hood after spring flooding changed the river's channel sometime between April 21, 2021 and June 7, 2021 was how it shifted considerably more eastward in White River Canyon. The original path here took it through the canyon in the floodplain, down a path surrounded by large rocks and boulders.
The flooding spring of 2021 changed that. The old channel is visible behind the trees directly behind the river. You can see a high berm at the far western edge of White River Canyon in the distance, and the original path took it through that section downstream through the floodplain and under the Highway 35 bridge.
The river's new channel through here shifted it eastward, through a section of trees, multi-colored rocks and soft silt, ash and dirt. You can see how powerful the river must have been flowing when it cut a new path through here in less than 51 days, as it's flowing through a much deeper channel cut into the landscape compared to the original one which weaved its way past large rocks and boulders.
I found the red in the soil and on the rocks here fascinating. The upper slopes and summit of Mount Hood are a little northeast from this view looking straight upstream on the river. In the distance you can see where the White River makes its shift towards the new path, as it angles close to 90 degrees as it leave the floodplain and heads down this section. Mount Hood was visible from the old channel following that angle along the river.
Still, nature is ever changing and one of the things I found most exciting was discovering new views and scenes in a place I've been visiting most of my life. This isn't the first time the White River has shifted channels through here, and it probably won't be the last as flooding from the spring melt on White River Glacier and the upper slopes of Mount Hood can channel large amounts of water, rocks, and glacial debris through White River Canyon.
In 2006, flooding was so severe it washed out the Highway 35 Bridge downstream, and when they rebuilt it they did so in an effort to allow it to survive future flooding. The design worked. The new path takes it through a section that used to go through a culvert under the bridge downstream from here. The post 2006 design of the bridge created a second opening on the bridge in an effort to prevent a repeat of 2006 when the culvert washed out along with the bridge.
It worked, the White River zigs and zags its way through here on its way down the lower slopes of Mount Hood along a brand new path through here while the bridge remained untouched. The river has around 7 zigzags through this short section of the canyon between here and where it meets up with the old channel upstream, so I though the name "Zig-Zag" was fitting the moment I saw the scene, before I even set up for the photo. The color palette here is fascinating, with red, gray, brown and green all mixing together under a dark and stormy sky.
There are several large rocks on the river's southwestern shore, both in the cut channel and up top above it, a visual testament to the raw power and fury of the Glacial White River when spring flooding causes it to roar down Mount Hood with a vengeance. It was a beautiful sight, and a wonderful reminder of the raw power of nature. I've been visiting Mount Hood since I was very young, when I would visit with my parents and family friends. Over 40 years later, the raw beauty and power of the mountain still takes my breath away. Mount Hood is one of nature's grandest cathedrals in Oregon, and I'll always find my way back to this magnificent place, ready to take in whatever wonders it has to offer, old or new.
