Soft pastel alpenglow and setting moon over the snow-capped peak of Mount Hood and forest below at dusk. Atmospheric glow above high ridge line.

Silent Solitude - Alpenglow and Moonset over Mount Hood at Dusk from Cloud Cap

Cloud Cap, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Alpenglow and Moonset at Dusk over Mount Hood and the Mount Hood National Forest from above Cloud Cap Saddle

Pastel colors softly illuminate the sky at dusk as Mount Hood rises up above Cloud Cap Saddle and the Mount Hood National Forest. The setting moon shines brightly in the skies above Mount Hood and the forest below as the last bit of soft alpenglow illuminates the north face of Mount Hood, the Coe Glacier and the summit of the mountain.

The burn scar from the 2008 Gnarl Ridge Fire shows along the far ridge above Eliot Branch Canyon as Eliot Glacier and the Coe Glacier dominate the northern slopes of Mount Hood high above the canyon. The edge of the Newton Clark Glacier is visible above Cooper Spur and the Langille Glacier is visible in front of Barrett Spur just behind the Langille Crags.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures alpenglow on Mount Hood above Cloud Cap and the Mount Hood National Forest as the moon sets at dusk. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

The Magic of Moonset and Alpenglow on Mount Hood from Cloud Cap

I've always loved those soft, subtle pastel colors of dusk over Mount Hood. The soft alpenglow which hangs on is magical, especially combined with the correct phase of moonlight. The setting moon really pulls everything together here, softly illuminating the forest below as the last bit of alpenglow clings to the upper slopes of Mount Hood.

It's a wondrous sight, standing at the edge of a cliff looking out at the mountain rising high above the forest below. It's a beautiful silence when it's just you and the mountain as the last light of day hangs on. Moments like this seemingly last forever. It's a silent solitude with just you, the mountain and the fading light as nature's grandest wonders unfold right in front of you. Everything always makes sense in places like this. Places like this are thin places which blur the lines of Heaven and Earth. It's like you're staring out at the wonders of Heaven, close enough to see but just out of reach on the other side of a thin veil.

As I stood high on a narrow ridge on the northeast side of Mount Hood above the Cloud Cap Saddle, the duality of the moment was striking. The mountain air around me was biting and cold, but the rocks at my back were radiating steady, stable warmth. Mount Hood has several places where thermal vents create a radiant, warm pocket of air in spot nearby. This was one of those places, and it was a surreal reminder that you’re not just standing on a mountain: you’re standing on a volcano. Feeling that internal heat from Mount Hood warm the air around me as I watched the moon set over the cold forest below was a beautiful silent solitude, and a subtle reminder as to why everything makes sense in places like this. I could live in moments like this forever.
