Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) rises into the night skies above moonlit Mount Hood as it reflects in the still waters of Trillium Lake.
Trillium Lake, Mount Hood and the Great Chase for Comet NEOWISE
This was one of the first photos I took of NEOWISE on what ended up being a 6000 mile trek all across the Pacific Northwest over a period of 2 months, and ironically it’s only a little over 1 hour from my house. This has long been one of my favorite spots on Mount Hood, and it’s long been one of my favorite compositions of the mountain. Hood is extremely photogenic, and it’s easy to see why. The water here isn’t always calm. A little bit of wind can change the mood of the whole photo, and a glass like reflection was important in order to capture the reflection of NEOWISE and Hood in the lake. Sometimes a line of climbers can be seen attempting to summit the mountain, and if you look closely you can see that here. As an added bonus, a partial moon softly illuminated Mount Hood as fog started to slowly rise up from the lake due to the temperature differential. It all came together in a very relaxing, serene manner. I had a lot of fun this night / early morning, especially helping my then 7 year old son learn photography and get some photos of his own with my backup camera body and travel tripod. Getting photos of NEOWISE and Hood was great, but it was the time spent helping my son learn behind the camera which really made this night special. Photographing it with my son as NEOWISE sailed over the still waters of Trillium Lake while the partial Moon faintly illuminated Mount Hood is something I will never forget.

Comet NEOWISE will not return to our solar system for another 6800 years (in approximately the year 8820 AD), making photos of Comet NEOWISE far more than just a once in a lifetime experience. Captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of nightscape experience. No trackers, no sky-swaps, and no generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
