Comet NEOWISE over Mount Hood and the Mirror like Waters of Trillium Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) rises into the night skies above moonlit Mount Hood as it reflects in the still waters of Trillium Lake. Climbers make their way up the southern face of Mount Hood, their climbing lights visible as the trail of lights ascends towards Crater Rock, Triangle Moraine, and Hogsback.
Zigzag Glacier blankets the slopes of Mount Hood to the left of Triangle Moraine, while White River Glacier blankets the slopes to the right of it. Below, Palmer Glacier (now technically Palmer Snowfield as glacier movement stopped in the mid 1980s) blankets the slopes above Timberline, rising to an elevation of 9,300 feet on the volcano's upper slopes. Illumination Saddle is visible between Castle Crags and Illumination Rock on the southwestern slopes of Mount Hood while Comet NEOWISE blazes across the heavens above Mount Hood, as the entire scene reflects in the silent waters of Trillium Lake.

Trillium Lake, Mount Hood and the Great Chase for Comet NEOWISE
This was one of the first photos I took of NEOWISE on what ended up being a 6000 mile trek all across the Pacific Northwest over a period of 2 months, at first chasing Comet NEOWISE for three weeks before pivoting back to chasing, Saturn, Jupiter with the Milky Way moving towards the Great Conjunction, chasing meteors across the Pacific Northwest skies, and chasing bioluminescence along the Oregon Coast and Pacific Ocean. The journey came to an abrupt pause in late August, when after photographing Chasing Neverland I had to send all my gear to Canon Professional Services, though thanks to my platinum level status replacement gear arrived within a few days and I was back out and about.
Freeze Frame was one of the first photos I took on this grand adventure, and ironically it’s only a little over 1 hour from my house. Trillium Lake has long been one of my favorite spots on Mount Hood, and it’s long been one of my favorite compositions of the mountain. Hood is extremely photogenic, and it’s easy to see why: it rises up in a near symmetrical manner from this angle, and when the water is smooth as glass the reflections feel like you're looking into a portal to another world. The water here isn’t always calm, a little bit of wind can change the mood of the whole photo in the snap of a finger, and a glass like reflection was important in order to capture the reflection of Comet NEOWISE and Mount Hood creating mirror reflections in Trillium Lake.
Sometimes when you're here in the wee hours of the morning long before dawn, a line of climbers can be seen attempting to summit the mountain, and if you look closely you can see that here. It's always an added treat when this happens, and on this night as an added bonus a partial moon softly illuminated Mount Hood as fog started to slowly rise up from the lake due to the temperature differential. It all came together in a very relaxing, serene manner befitting of a thin place which seems to blur the lines between Heaven and Earth.
I had a lot of fun this night and in the early morning hours, especially helping my then 7 year old son learn photography and get some photos of his own with my backup camera body and one of my travel tripods. Getting photos of NEOWISE and Mount Hood was absolutely amazing, but it was the time spent here helping my son learn behind the camera which really made this night special. Photographing it with my son as NEOWISE sailed over the still waters of Trillium Lake while the partial Moon faintly illuminated Mount Hood is something I will never forget. It was a gorgeous scene mixed with timeless family memories, and in the end that's really what my career in fine art landscape photography is all about.

Captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of nightscape experience. No trackers, no sky-swaps, and no generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
