The Wonders of Lolo Pass and Alpenglow at Sunset on Mount Hood's Western Face
I've always loved the view of Mount Hood's western face, probably because it's the view I grew up with in the Portland metro area, so I've literally spent my entire life looking at this view in some form or another. Though less famous than Jonsrud Viewpoint further west, the view from Lolo Pass is absolutely breathtaking.
It's not always serene, as giant electrical lines run through here and often leave electrical crackling in the air you can hear, but when you're able to find a clean view, step away and block out all of that, it's an absolutely surreal feeling. It's a gorgeous view here, as Mount Hood ascends skyward above the Mount Hood National Forest framed by the slopes of Last Chance Mountain and East Zigzag Mountain while Slide Mountain rises up behind them.
The view of Barrett Spur is incredible, and Crater Rock is clearly visible at the top of the bulge on the mountain's southwestern face. Illumination Saddle is visible at the lower end of the bulge. It's classic, vintage Mount Hood framed by the dense pine and fir trees covering the forests below. When that magical alpenglow light arrives just after sunset and seemingly hangs on forever, it feels as if you've been transported to the mountains of Heaven.
The vivid sunset alpenglow on Mount Hood is always a treat. Mount Hood is a thin place which feels like it blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth, and there's nothing more wondrous than the magnificent alpenglow light bathing the slopes of the Queen of Oregon as purple and magenta colors blanket the heavens above.
The rolling foothills visible here are a glorious carpet of thick dense forest, and witnessing the marvelous emerald carpet of forest rolling across the landscape below as the glaciers and snow covered slopes of Mount Hood rise high into the dreamland above is a beautiful contrast befitting of a place that feels like it's located in the mountains of Heaven.
There's nothing quite like a cool alpine breeze brushing against your cheeks as Mount Hood springs to life in all its grandeur. There's something about witnessing the glowing mountain under a blanket of soft pastels which always takes my breath away. Time always slows down, and I'm always left with an understanding of why I've literally spent my life visiting the magical landscape surrounding Mount Hood, and why I'll always find my way back here.
